The Nelson American Football Club Inc

The Nelson American Football Club Inc. (NAFC) was founded in 2015 and is affiliated with the governing national body, The New Zealand American Football Federation (NZAFF). NAFC operates as the first and currently only official American Football club in the Tasman region. Already rich with talent, the club currently boasts three players selected in national teams, including The NZ Steel Blacks and The NZ Makos Flag Football team. As well as many selected for the wider training squads for these representative teams.

Currently we host a Flag Football league, the non-contact code of American Football (which draws comparison to touch rugby as a non-contact version of rugby league). We also have plans to launch a contact football program in the near future.

2016 saw our inaugural local competition ‘The Honey Bowl’, consisting of approximately 30 players, varying in age from 12 to 40 years old. Spread over three teams.  We have grown over the years to 6 local teams with 100+ registered players competing to win the prestigious Trophy.

The Honey Bowl Competition is sponsored by MTF Nelson who also sponsor the Nelson Honey Badgers representative teams.

The Nelson representitive team, known as The Nelson Honey Badgers, is one of the power houses for flag football in New Zealand. With a coaching staff that has a wealth of experince and knowlegde that is producing some of best technical skilled players in the country.

The Club Currently caters to players aged 14 and up for both male and female, with further plans for junior and senior programs in the near future.  NAFC also seek to expand and develop our relationships with clubs in other regions and we are currently working with clubs in all over the country to offer more games and more opportunities for our players. With guidance from the national body, it is also in our scope to expand into full contact American Football program in the near future. This too would offer many exciting opportunities for players to compete against other clubs around the country, while providing pathways to play outside of the region, in national teams and overseas.
