We have have sufficient pilgrims for Saturday night, 14 Sept at Ratimera Bay.

So subject only to a really, nasty weather prognosis, let’s assembly for dress-ups at 6:00 pm, pre-prandial drinks, multi-course dining and then some inspired short story telling.

And rather than ‘Pirates’, I would like to run with the ‘Steam Punk’ dress up theme.Have a look on-line if you are short on ideas.

I’m looking at paddling out from Waikawa (the sand beach in front of the shop)aiming for 1:00pm ETD but within half an hour of that. 'Tis about 2 - 2.5 hours for the paddle.

Bring stuff for overnight camping and cooking.Prizes will be awarded for the best dressed male and female.

Can you provide me with your cellphone number for co-ordinationif departing from Picton/Waikawa and in case we need to check on late arrivals.

Wednesday Evening and Weekend Trip Calendar

The calendar provides a variety of conditions to suit a ramge of paddlers & to encourage more people onto the water. Please use the CSKN website and/or Facebook page to keep up to date with amendments & information:

CSKNet website (you are already here)
and Facebook -

We want to help people improve skills and challenge themselves, whilst enjoying safe paddling. The trips are not guided trips and though there will be a trip organiser and/or leader, you will ultimately be responsible for your safety and wellbeing.

Where there is an 'Organiser' listed in the calendar, this person will be responsible for running the trip but not necessarily the leadership on the water. He/she will arrange with one of the recognised leaders to be present. Trips should be cancelled if there is no leader. Inner harbour sessions may run without a recognised leader/instructor, (most of us paddle here reglarly, not just with this group).

As sea kayakers we know that sheltered places can provide very challenging conditions, and exposed places can be flat calm, but in an attempt to give an idea of the expected / normal conditions the calendar has been split into 5 categories:

Novice - Green
Easy conditions within Lyttelton or Akaroa Harbour, no surf. Cass Bay training sessions. Day trips of less than 4 hours paddling

Novice/Intermediate - Yellow
Sea conditions with waves up to 0.5 metre and wind speed up to 15 kts. Non-committing surf conditions. Easy moving water on the Waimak. At least 6 hours paddling on day trips.

Intermediate - Orange
Sea conditions with waves up to 1metre and wind speed up to 20 kts. Some
exposure outside of the harbour, i.e. Godley Head. Ability to roll in flat water or self rescue. Multi-day experience.

Intermediate/Advanced - Red
Sea conditions with waves up to 1.5 metres and wind speed up to 25 kts.
Comfortable in exposed conditions and able to roll in surf/rough water. Multi-day experience in a wide variety of conditions.

Advanced - Blue
Capable of paddling in above conditions for extended periods. Experienced in leading trips. Recognised Instructor qualification.

Trip gradings may change depending upon sea conditions on the day. Please remember, it is up to the individual which trips they take part in and common sense should be exercised at all times Let us not overestimate our abilities.

Timing
Wednesday - Meet at 6.00pm, on the water by 6.30pm. Should be off the water before dark!

Weekend trips – as directed by the trip organiser(s)

Trip organisers may, in consultation with leaders, limit the number of participants on any particular trip for safety and management reasons. Where no participation cap is mentioned, ie Cass Bay sessions, more than one group may be formed. To book on a trip, other than Wednesday evenings, contact the organiser direct.

Where there is either an activity that does not suit your needs, or there is something else you would like to add, please feel free to advertise this and draw support to run such a trip/session/event from other paddlers.

We hope that there is something here for you to participate in, and that you enjoy the experience. Be safe!
