The Checkers Basketball Club (established in 1969) is one of the oldest and strongest clubs in Canterbury with a proud tradition and a long involvement with local and New Zealand basketball.  The Club has had no less than six teams in local competitions and as many as sixteen teams in various grades over the years with many championship winning teams amongst them.

Throughout this time, we have had a large number of Canterbury representatives from the Club and good numbers going on to become New Zealand representatives, or involved in the ANBL.

Many others have represented the Canterbury Rams and the Canterbury Wildcats/Pouakai womens team as well as other national league teams around the country.

Our record demonstrates the ability and strength of the Club to attract and develop players with the ability to compete at a high level and coaches with the experience to advance these players to representative level.

We are always keen to extend the numbers in our Club, so if anyone is keen to get involved in Coaching or playing, please contact Heather Devlin to discuss.

We cater for senior teams (both male and female) from Premier Mens and Womens through to social midweek league for men and women. We do not cater for mixed gender teams as this is not a grade that is run by the Canterbury Basketball Assn.

We have involvement in age-group pathway teams:

Mens U20s and Mens U23s

Girls U13s, Girls U16s and Womens French Cup (U23)

We are always on the look out for talented players or those who simply wish to give basketball a go in a social environment - regardless of ability or age.
