ADVENTURE RACING

The focus for the remainder of the year is to get students to develop their navigational and orienteering skills.  This needs to become the foundation as it has been lacking in students over the past 16 months and has become our weaker area in adventure racing.  Aim is to get all students to orienteer courses by themselves.  Keeping in mind Wednesday nights can be done by self, pairs or groups.

Another element is improving mountain biking, kayaking and rock climbing and racing fitness.  Students need to get as many events under their belt and become competitive in the local orienteering events and adventure races.  If students can begin to dominate these events then this will naturally transfer into adventure racing.  We have an awesome group coming through and what would be great is to continue and capitalise on what we have done over the past months.

First aim is to focus on the local events – on Sunday’s.  Also look at competing in races that will put their skills to the test.  Due to having children over the past 3 years I have stopped doing the Wednesday nights and specific adventure races and it most certainly shows.

If students want to make a name for themselves and gain results in this arena they need to focus on having a base fitness, running and biking (approx. 3-4 runs a week 30 mins duration and 2 mountain bikes 30mins -hour long).  This will assist them to successfully complete a 6 hour race and be competitive.  If they can get on their bikes at least 3-5 times a week they will be amazed at the improvements they could make and these rides could be done during the holidays.  Even if they are riding for 20 mins (10km) ideally 45 mins to an hour for adaptations to take place.

Adventure racing can work well with other sport, and I like students making the most of the opportunities offered at school.  Adventure racing is about fitness, navigation skills and team work.

If students are keen to stick with this activity and go on to be in the Sir Edmund Hillary Team then some ground work needs to be done in the next 12 months.  Really keen to create this sport as a no. 1 for students if they want it to.  Be great to get a degree of commitment as this is needed to gain high level results.  However, it is also a sport where students are able to dabble in it as long as they can orienteer and have a good base fitness.  This is why it is great as it can be done at so many different levels social fun to competitive.

Transport – will be needed as events arise and I hope we can manage and work in together.  If the school van is free then we can use this at a cost .70 a km which will be divided amongst students using and placed on accounts.  Please any problems let me know.  First thing students need to do is let me know what events they are wanting to do so that we can organise it and plan for the up and coming months.  Please look at the dates and events provided here.
