CANTERBURY v MARLBOROUGH
Saturday 12 September in Blenheim

Canterbury wins by 4pts

Canterbury held onto the Joan Shearman Trophy in Blenheim on Saturday with a strong final round of Pairs. Trailing after the 1st session 17 - 19, we came back in the second to lead 38 - 34 but a disastrous final round of Fours (winning only one of the six games) took us into the final round of Pairs 4pts behind; 40 - 44. Marlborough came close to beating us in this last round. A couple of the games were lost by just 1pt. If just one of those games had gone to Marlborough, they would have drawn with us. As it was Canterbury won 7 of the 12 games and drew 2 giving us 16pts against Marlborough's 8 making the final score 56 - 52.
Congratulations Canterbury.

NZ HENSELITE SINGLES
Saturday 12 September at Avonhead School

Ashley Diamond wins the 2015 Henselite Champion of Champion Singles today at Avonhead School. Diamond, representing the Upper Hutt School Club proved to strong for Grant Rayner of North Wellington beating him 16 - 3 in the final. Diamond's toughest challenge came in the quarter finals against Hugh Bosman of Otago. Bosman got away to an early 5pt lead before Diamond began to close the gap. Diamond caught him up and kept with him, each winning an end in turn. Playing the final end it was 10 - 10. Bosman had first bowl and it was a little bit behind. Diamond drew a toucher. Bosman changed hand and drew the shot off Diamond. Diamond's 2nd bowl missed and in perhaps a fatal mistake Bosman played the same way and also missed leaving a draw open for Diamond who didn't miss a second time. Bosman now had no position to play to - his first & third bowls were on the wrong side of the head but in a little run shot he managed to promote his own bowl and looked to hold the shot. Diamond went up for a closer look and came back with his hand outstretched - he still held the shot, no need to play his final bowl.

In the Plate event the final was a ittle closer but Paul Smith from the South City Club in Tauranga lead from the start and extended his lead in the last few ends over Graham Low of the Grasmere Club in Southland to take the title 15 - 7. Low wasn't able to repeat his semi-final performance where he came from behind and scored a 3 on the final end beating Les Heywood of Wanganui 15-13.

Our representative, Maurice Berkeley, got off to a flier winning his 1st game 14-7 but then lost his next game 4-20. Came back flying in the 3rd to win 22-3 and needed the 4th game to qualify. Playing Hugh Bosman, the score was 7-7 with about 4 ends to go but in these last few ends Bosman didn't miss. Berkeley was down 5 playing the last end. Game over. Bosman would go on to face Diamond in the quarter final.

Berkeley entered the Plate event and lost to John Zittersteijn who went on to win his next game then lose by 1 to Les Heyward.

In all thirty-three competitors lined up today to vie for the 2015 Henselite Champion of Champion Singles Trophy. All having won their district finals held earlier in the year.
The field of strong contenders included: NZ Rep and ex Cantabrian Ashley Diamond now playing for Upper Hutt Valley;
North Taranaki's John Zitterstejin NZ Rep and member of this year's winning Welch Trophy team; North Wellington's Grant Rayner & Waikato's Linda McCurdy both NZ Reps; Taranaki's Sue Bourne & Southland's Graham Low. Another ex Cantabrian Brian Stewart also made the field having won the Marlborough final. Closer to home, Darryn Turner represented Ashburton; Nick Scriggens South Canterbury; Stefan Robb North Otago & Steven Bellis West Coast.

Congratulations to both winners & place getters.

WELCH TROPHY 4 - 6 SEPTEMBER
Lower Hutt

Canterbury Runners-up

Canterbury went into the final session Sunday morning with a half point lead over North Taranaki and played them & Counties in the Fours. Canterbury's Blair Spicer, James Sullivan, Kevin Anngow & Adam Williams played North Taranaki's Grant l'Ami, Alister Wilson, Sean Ridley & Elizabeth Morrow while Simon Thomas, Mike King, David Philpott & Deanne Osborne played Counties' Matthew Ellis, Jason Parker, Derek Bowman & Phil Spring. After 7 ends the score in both games was even then disaster struck. Firstly in Simon's game, 3 down on the head Simon had last bowl but it missed its target and gave away another 2 making them 5 down going into the last end. They played exceptionally and held 6 for the win but Ellis killed the jack forcing an extra end which we won but only by 1 leaving us 2pts shy of the win. In Blair's game we picked up a 2 on the 8th end to go into the final end 2pts up but that gave l'Ami last bowl and with his last bowl he drew another shot to give them 4 shots and the win by 2pts. North Taranaki lost their other Fours but their win against us put them 3.5pts ahead. In the Singles we closed the gap winning 5.5 games to N Taranaki's 4.5. It all came down to the final round of Pairs. We had to win 1 more game than N. Taranaki to claim the Trophy but they played their best round of Pairs for the tournament only conceding 1 draw. Final standings:
North Taranaki 108
Canterbury 99
Waikato 89.5
Counties 88.5
Upper Hutt Valley 82
Otago 73

The win is North Taranaki’s fourth Welch Trophy title having won the event in 1980, 2012, and 2013. It gives Grant Harvey his Gold Star and makes 16yr old Aidan Zittersteijn (who replaced an unwell Lindsay Willis in the final session) the youngest player to win a Welch medal.
Congratulations to North Taranaki.

Speaking at the Super 7s on the Wednesday following the Welch, Canterbury's team Captain, Rob Osborne, spoke highly of our team's effort praising their performance over the weekend and thanked all the members of the Squad and all those who travelled to support the team.

CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIP PAIRS
played at Hornby Club Sunday 12th July
Proudly sponsored by
O'Sheas Publlic House, Marshland Rd

Simon & Julie Thomas of the St Paul's Club create history winning the Canterbury Championship Pairs.

In a repeat of the Mixed Fours, Simon again faced James Sullivan in the final.
James (again playing with Kevin Anngow) won the first end to lead 2-0 but after 6 ends was down 3-6, within reach but couldn't repeat the Mixed Fours win.
Sullivan was sitting on a hattrick having won the Pairs title the previous two years.
In a close semi-final the Thomas's were nearly put out by Blair Spicer & Adam Williams but Julie lead brilliantly to often have shot and position.

The win gives Simon his 20th Canterbury Title and makes him the first person to win 20 Canterbury Titles.
The win gives Julie her 14th Canterbury Title and equally impressive given this was her first tournament in over two years.

Congratulations to both Simon & Julie.

The 66th Lion Foundation National Championships in Timaru 6 - 13 June.

James Sullivan wins Robertson Trophy for Player of the Tournament.
Sullivan's team of Blair Spicer(skip), James Sullivan, Kevin Anngow, & Jeremy Markham made it to the final of the Open Fours on Saturday where they met Grant L'Ami, Paul Midgley, Mike & Lorraine Phipps. L'Ami & Mike Phipps won the Open Pairs on Tueday but Sullivan's Semi-finals in the Singles & Triples gave him more points.
Well done James.
Hot on his heels was Jeremy Markham who played with Sullivan in the Pairs, Triples & Fours giving him the same number of points but Sullivan's performance in the Singles won him the trophy.

L'Ami's team proved too strong in the Fours beating Spicer's team 13-6 in the final. The win gave Grant L'Ami & Mike Phipps their second title for the Tournament.

Fay Donaldson(skip), Margaret Phillips, Elaine Williams & Margaret Bunt won the Masters Fours beating Lloyd Prattley(skip), Allan Gibson, Rana Bleeker & Graham Imms 12-8 in the final.

Full results of all Tournament play can be found here (Google Spreadsheet).
A summary of each day's play including the Academy & Masters Events can be found on the NZIB website here.

Earlier results:

Teri Anderson, Paul Psaila & Grant Rayner(skip) retain their Open Triples Title on Thursday, beating Jacque Porter, Frank McKenna & Robin Porter(skip) 12-4 in the final.
This is the third time this team has won this title having won it in 2010, 2014 & now 2015.

Chris Guy, Jean Stratford & Stewart Stratford(skip) won the Masters Triples beating Diane Warwood, Helen Guthrie & Wayne Williams(skip) 12-5 in the final.

A canterbury team fell shy of the Open Triples final by one point:
Jeremy Markham, Matt Markham & James Sullivan(skip) lost in a thrilling semi-final 11-10 to the eventual winners.
The closing stages of the last end saw the jack parked in a corner of the mat. Rayner held the shot. Sullivan got down to draw to the jack and delivered what looked to be the perfect bowl to sit for shot but it ran slightly to far giving Rayner the win.

Northern teams won both the Academy & Masters Events Wednesday afternoon: 39-11 & 29-19.

Grant L'Ami & Mike Phipps won the Open Pairs beating Paul Wright & Richard Caddy 13-5 in the final.
This is their third Pairs win having first won the title in 2002 then 2014 & now 2015.

Ron & Rae Inglis won the Masters Pairs beating Barry & Jenny Chapman 8-7 in the final.

Avon Compton won the Open Singles beating Lloyd Bellis 9-4 in the final.
Ray Christensen won the Masters Singles beating Henry Pratt 10-8 in the final.

Compton beat James Sullivan in another thrilling Semi-final.
Compton was 6-1 up after 5 ends but Sullivan fought back to be 5-6 going into the last end.
A one on that end took the game to an extra end where Sullivan held three shots but without last bowl. A superbly executed bowl from Compton won him the game. Well done Avon and great effort James.
