Dunedin Karate is an organisation set up to serve, promote, support, and encourage the teaching and practice of Karate-do and Kobudo in Otago, New Zealand.

Students often join to improve their fitness, strength, and flexibility or learn self-defence.  Most find that karate affects every part of their lives, increasing their confidence, self-esteem and discipline.

Karate is a complete martial art and can be practised by anyone regardless of age, gender, size or strength.

Not only is karate an excellent physical preparation for children developing strong, balanced neuro-muscular links, but it also helps develop communication between both brain hemispheres.  The confidence karate gives students makes them less likely to be easy targets for bullies.

Our instructors do not believe studying Traditional Martial Arts and competing in tournaments are mutually exclusive.  Students have competed successfully at regional, national and international competitions for decades and are still progressing as solid "Traditional" Martial Artists.

We teach Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate-Do - an effective self-defence system that includes physical conditioning, the study of Kata and its Bunkai (self-defence applications). We also teach traditional Ryukyu Kobudo, (traditional Okinawan weapons), including Nunchaku, Sai, Tonfa, and Bo (6-foot staff), senior students also practice Eku (oar), Kama (sickles), and other weapons.
