TRIALS AND SELECTION POLICY AND PROCEDURES


Objectives:

  • To have ability grouped teams in the Year 7/8, Senior and Premier Grades within the Selwyn Netball Centre competition, graded at the appropriate level for each team’s ability and development.

  • Identifying, attracting, developing and retaining netball players and improving their skills.

  • To welcome all new players and endeavour to accommodate all players wanting to register with Dunsandel RFC Netball Club.


Selection Policy:

  • All players must be financial members of our club.

  • Primary players must be in school years 5, 6, 7 or 8.

  • Year 9 and above players are selected into Senior Grades

  • Year 10 and above may be selected into Premier Grades only with consultation between the selectors and the Executive Committee and based on the maturity and social aspects of the player and team also.

  • Selection into a team is done by trial.

  • There will be two trial dates named, at least ONE must be attended. Apologies for being unable to attend trials must be communicated to the Executive Committee PRIOR to the trials commencing. The Executive Committee reserve the right to decide on acceptable valid reasons for not attending trials.

  • Non attendance at trials will result in a players placement in a team being based on availability of positions within the teams, information provided by the coach at the conclusion of the previous season and through consultation with the selectors, coaches and Executive Committee.

  • Players can only be selected into a team without trialling under exceptional circumstances such as injury or prior family commitment.

  • Players are selected on ability but considerations can also be made in regard to the age of the player and their previous grade.

  • Selectors may obtain information regarding players from previous coaches.

  • Teams of 8 to be selected. If not enough players to form full teams, 7 will be selected in the higher teams.

  • Players will be informed of their selection via Facebook and the website.

  • Players may be offered dispensation based on player numbers and this is solely at the discretion of the Executive Committee.

  • Dispensation requests are forwarded to the SNC Executive Committee who approve or decline the request.

  • Senior players are placed in an appropriate team that will allow them to develop their netball skills and enhance their enjoyment of the game.

  • Selections will be done in a trial format.


SENIOR TEAM TRIAL AND SELECTION PROCEDURE:

Selectors:

  • Team selections are to be carried out by independent selectors nominated by the committee. The selectors will consult with a committee nominated club member with knowledge of the past season.

  • There will be a minimum of two selectors.

  • Team selection is to be finalised within one week of the final trial date if possible.

  • The selectors decision is final.


Aim of Team trials: To select the best possible team to win at their level (senior grades).

Trial Format:

  • Trials will be advertised in the Ellesmere Echo, Ellesmere College and Dunsandel School newsletters/notices, our club website, club Facebook page and community pages.

  • Players must register prior to trials.

  • Trials will consist of a series of 7 minute games, with all trialists getting the opportunity to be on court at least twice.

  • Selectors will attempt to give trialists the opportunity to trial at each of their preferred positions, up to a maximum of 3 positions.

  • During the trials, the selectors will evaluate individual skill levels, fitness and team playing abilities of each player.


Competencies and Qualities Considered:

  • The major criterion for selection will be based on the performance of the player at the appropriate trial. Selectors will consider team balance where the 8-9 best individual players may not provide the best team combination. Teams will be selected to have a variety of combinations to cover such events such as sickness, injury or unavailability during the season.

JUNIOR TEAM TRIAL AND SELECTION PROCEDURE:

This is a non competitive grade where the focus is on player development and touches of the ball.

  • Where possible, year 5 and 6 players will be selected on year level. When there is an uneven number to create a 5/6 split, teams of mixed year level and ability will be named.

  • The club will hold a Year 5/6 fun day.

  • Year 5/6 players will have skills development sessions at the Dunsandel Domain
