CLUB HISTORY

Maraetai Tennis Club was formed 15th December 1962. It was originally located on the corner of Te Pene Road and Maraetai Drive, sharing premises with the Maraetai Bowling Club. The old tennis court markings can still be seen today in the bowling club’s carpark.

In the 1980s a steering committee was formed to lobby the council for land at Te Puru Park for new tennis courts, as it was increasingly obvious there wasn’t enough room at the Te Pene Road site to accommodate growth in both clubs.

In 1986 the courts at Te Puru Park were opened. The Honours board was erected at this time and it displays the names of all the the club champions from 1986 through to the present day. The clubhouse was the original Drinkrow residence from Karaka Road in Beachlands and was moved to its current site by the tennis club in 1995 using Maraetai Boat Club’s tractor.

In March 2012 the back two courts were resurfaced in a 16mm synthetic turf pile, offering club members a fantastic all-weather surface to enjoy. Manukau City Council contributed towards the cost of this upgrade. The front two courts were layed in August 2014 with funding assistance from NZ Community Trust.

In February 2014, a volley wall was constructed between the tennis courts and the netball courts offering a practice facility for the community to enjoy. This project was jointly funded by Maraetai Tennis Club, Pohutukawa Coast Netball Club and Auckland Council.
