Many more Waikato rugby men head to war, a Home Guard is set up at Rugby Park, and most Waikato rugby clubs are in recess.
Air Force bases are set up around Hamilton - which leads to Army and Air Force teams being included in the Hamilton competition. Several future All Blacks are spread throughout the teams, including Fred Allen.
