Kiwi 29er Gold at RYA Youth Nationals
Markus Somerville and Isaac McHardie took the RYA (UK) Youth Nationals gold medal in the 29er skiff class after a tight battle with Britain’s best pair Owen Bowerman and Morgan Peach. The event was great training in the lead up to the Youth Worlds to be held in Portugal in July and is no doubt a good confidence boost for the Kiwi duo - well done lads and good luck at the Youth Worlds.

Australian Youth Champs, 6-10 Jan 2014
Six 29er teams represented New Zealand at the Australian Youth Champs 2014, hosted by Sorrento SCBC, Melbourne. A tricky venue and a good range of conditions provided great opportunities for everyone, against a top quality Australian fleet who also had this as the final event for their Youth Worlds selection. Three NZ teams finished in the top 10: William McKenzie and Sam Simpson showed great consistency to finish in 5th place overall, Josh Handa and Tim Adair finished 8th overall (6 points behind 5th place), with Markus Somerville and Isaac McHardie finishing 9th overall. The regatta winners and Australian Youth Worlds selected representatives were Jim Colley and Shaun Connor who won with a slender 2 point lead over 2nd-placed Kurt Hansen and Harry Morton, separated by a massive 40 point margin over the 3rd placed team. Micah Wilkinson and Jack Rogers finished 12th, Leonard Takahashi-Fry and Rory McCutcheon finished 16th, with James Wilson and Oscar Gunn placing 28th in a strong fleet of 40. Fantastic learning experience and training in the lead up to the New Zealand 29er Nationals which start on 25th January 2014 at Murrays Bay Sailing Club on Auckland’s North Shore. Australian 29er Nationals 2013-14

Final day at the Australian 29er Nationals and a costly capsize in the last race saw Markus and Isaac swap places with Josh and Tim to take 5th and 1st international, Josh & Tim 6th. Meanwhile William and Sam showed some depth by moving up 2 places overall to finish 9th. Leonard Takahashi-Fry also picked up a special award for helping out Chelsea Connor at short notice - nice one Len.

Great experience for the Kiwi teams, roll on the Australian Youth Champs in Sorrento in a few days when more Kiwi teams will extend the colony here! Thanks to the organisers at Royal Brighton Yacht Club and the Aus29ers for hosting such a great event and making the Kiwis feel welcome.

1)      Separate girls & boys fleets in the ISAF Youth Worlds, beginning 2015

2)      Approval of Women’s and Youth world titles in addition to the Open world title we currently recognize.

The new World titles will take effect beginning 2014 at the Worlds.

  • The Youth title will be awarded to the top all youth team (both sailors must be 18 or under – for 2014, born 1996 or later).

Gold - RYA Youth National Championships UK
Apr 2013: Markus Somerville and Jack Simpson do it again at GBR's Youth National Championships held in Largs, Scotland in chilly conditions.

Watch Video
"The 29er class saw a masterpiece in sailing in the shifty conditions from the events international competitors as New Zealand’s Marcus Somerville and Jack Simpson finished with an impressive score line. Mimi El-Khazindar and 2012 RYA Youth National champion Ben Batten finished second overall and top GBR boat ahead of Owen Bowerman and Morgan Peach in third.

“I’m really happy that we came away with a win. We were second coming into today so we have pulled it off so I’m pretty happy,” said New Zealand’s Markus Somerville.

“The event has been run really well and they have made it feel like a major event which is great at a Youth event. We came away with the win which makes it feel even better. In New Zealand we had two boats trialling for the ISAF Youth Worlds spot last year and we had about 10 this year so there is a lot more competition here especially when there is around 50 boats. The UK competitors are really good and some are the best in the world so it’s good to see how we go against them.”

ISAF Youth Worlds 2013 - NZ Selections
Feb 2013: YNZ has selected Markus Somerville & Jack Simpson to represent NZ in the 29er at the ISAF Youth Worlds being held in Limassol, Cyprus in July 2013. Also selected to represent NZ in the SL16 are Isaac McHardie & Micah Wilkinson. Congratulations and good luck to the team as they prepare for the event.

Somerville & Simpson 3-in-a-row to win 2013 NZ 29er Nationals
Jan 2013: The NZ 29er Nationals 2013 have concluded with a comprehensive victory by Wakatere lads Markus Somerville (helm) and Jack Simpson (crew).

Over the past month the pair have notched up wins at Sail Sydney and the Australian 29er Nationals. They didn't have it all their own way though with Cole and Trent Rippey from Tauranga taking out the final race to secure their 3rd placing (2nd Kiwis). George Stent and Ben Robinson from Australia took second place. The entire 3-day regatta was sailed in strong winds off Murrays Bay which tested the limits of the boats and sailors. 15 July 2011
Congratulations to Jack Simpson and Logan Dunning Beck who competed in the 2011 ISAF youth worlds in Zadar, Croatia gaining an overall 6th placing.

7 February 2011

Sail Auckland 2011 for the 29ers was an extremely close battle between the top two boats.  After 15 races the points table was drawn at 21  with the last race sailed in a dying breeze. At the top mark for the last time Jack Simpson and Logan Beck were just ahead of Matthew Spray and Tyler Russell. With the pressure on, Matt and Tyler clipped the mark and had to complete a 360 penalty turn which handed the race to Jack and Logan. They held on to take a deserved 1st placing by 1 point.

15 October 2010
Congratulations to Alexandra Maloney and Sam Bullock (Murrays Bay Sailing Club and Tauranga Yacht & Powerboat Club) who have been nominated for the YNZ 2010 young sailor of the year awards for their recent success in the youth worlds.

17 July 2010
Congratulations to Alexandra Maloney and Sam Bullock who have secured the silver medal in the ISAF youth worlds in Istanbul, Turkey in the Open 29er skiff event in which 18 nations were competing.

They were 4th in the last race and unable to catch the French team of Gael Jaffrezic and Julien Bloyet of France who went into the last day with the lead and won the final race to claim the gold medal. The New Zealanders were five points back, and five points clear of the bronze medal winners Antoine Screve and James Moody of the USA.

Maloney and Bullock have sailed solidly throughout the regatta which has produced challenging light and shifty winds at times, especially in the early stages. Just prior to this regatta they finished fifth, and second best youth team at the 2010 Open 29er European Championships.

5 July 2010
Congratulations to Alexandra Maloney and Sam Bullock who have achieved 2nd place in the youth section (5th place in the overall gold fleet) of the European champs out of 114 entries. This is a great result.
Alex and Sam will now travel to Istanbul, Turkey to compete in the ISAF youth worlds from 8th to 17th July 2010. We wish them all the best luck for their sailing.
