MUSIC TUITION PROGRAMME

Our Vocal and Instrumental Tuition Programme provides an opportunity for students to have training from one of our 25 specialist music tutors, during school time on the school premises.
Students can enrol for group tuition ($8.50 per lesson, in a group of 2 or 3 students) or individual tuition ($25 per lesson). Lessons are 30 minutes in duration and there are 30 weeks of tuition during the school year.

Enrolments for lessons take place at the start of the school year by completing the official Music Tuition Enrolment form (available at the Music Office from Day 1 of the school year). There may be vacancies in tuition throughout the year, so students can sometimes enrol during Term 2 and 3 or lessons.

PRACTICE

As with any form of study weekly homework will be given for music tuition. We expect students to regularly practice the set homework at home between lessons and to give their best effort to making good progress during the year. Students should seek help with their choir/orchestra/band music from their music tutor, as well as guidance on choice and execution of repertoire for NCEA Music Performance Assessments.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Can I choose more than one music lesson?
Yes. Many students take tuition in two different areas. Students who wish to take three different music lessons must consult with the HOD Music before enrolling. In all cases students will be expected to catch up on any work missed in the classroom due to attending music lessons, so you need to be organised and communicate well with your classroom teachers.

When do lessons take place?
90% of lessons are scheduled during school hours.  Lessons are 30 minutes long and will be at the same time each week (eg. 9am Monday) so students are not missing the same classroom subject each week.

Can I have my lesson at lunchtime or after school?
For lunchtime lesson slots priority is given to senior students, students taking NCEA Music and students taking more than one type of music lesson. Some tutors are on site before school and after school for lessons. Every effort will be made to satisfy ‘out of class time’ requests but this is not always possible.

How do I enrol? What is the deadline?
Music Tuition Enrolment Forms will be available at the start of the school year from the Music Office. Forms must be returned in person with fees to the Finance Office. The deadline is normally in the second week of February. There may only be a handful of vacancies in some lessons after February, but students should enrol on time to avoid the risk of missing out.

Do I need to bring my own instrument to school for lessons?
With the exception of students learning Piano, Keyboard, Drums and Double Bass, all students must bring their own instrument to school for tuition. Drummers must bring their own sticks. In all cases, students who are learning an instrument must have access that instrument for practising throughout the year.

Can I store my instrument at school?
Yes. We have a storeroom for guitars and a storeroom for other instruments. Both have coded keypads for security. Instruments are not to be stored for more than 24 hours, and all cases must be clearly named. Instruments are stored at your own risk.

Can I book a room to practice drums or piano?
Yes. Before school is the best time to get a room for personal practise on a regular basis. There is a weekly booking sheet for rooms and students should book in at the start of the week via the Duty Music Teacher.

I have no experience in music. Do you have lessons for beginners?
Yes, most tuition is available at beginner levels. It is advisable to talk to the Music Office before enrolling in beginner lessons if you are unsure which instrument to learn.

Can I cancel my lessons part way through the year?
Students are always encouraged to commit fully for the duration of the tuition programme – 30 lessons. If a student is changing schools or moving out of Auckland they can of course cancel the lessons and apply for a refund. Other reasons for cancelling tuition once the tuition year has started will be considered by the Music Office, and refunds given at the discretion of the administration staff.

ATTENDANCE

We expect students, parent and tutors to communicate freely regarding all aspects of tuition. Each   tutor will have their own expectations and guidelines regarding absentees and catching up missed lessons, but as a general rule we adhere to the following.

“If you cannot come to a lesson for any reason it is polite to let your tutor know BEFORE your lesson (and to apologise afterwards if no prior warning was possible).  Students in GROUP tuition will not receive a refund or a catch up for any lessons missed.  Students taking INDIVIDUAL tuition must be very sure to tell their tutor well in advance (at least 24 hours notice) if they will be absent from a lesson, as the tutor has set aside that time slot specifically.  It is perfectly reasonable for the tutor to count your lesson as taken if you fail to turn up without giving sufficient prior warning.  Students must make every effort to attend any ‘catch up’ lessons scheduled by the tutor.  Obviously, in the event that the tutor is away, lessons will be made up.”

Please do not text the tutor the night before your lesson (or the morning of) to say you can’t come, and then expect a catch up lesson. Make contact at a reasonable time of the day - I would advise that any contact should be made before 8.30pm).  Please understand that our music tutors often visit 5 or 6 other schools during the week and it is not possible, nor reasonable, to expect the tutor to rearrange their schedule just to suit one student – especially if you are making a request at the last minute.  Please be organised, and communicate any absences well in advance.
