Where is Rock Climbing?

Rock climbing alternates between the YMCA Adventure Centre and Uprising. YMCA has top-rope & lead climbing facilities and a small boulder cave, while Uprising is a large bouldering-only facility.

What If It's My First Time Climbing?

  1. If it is your first time climbing, you must have filled out the waivers before coming climbing!
  2. Both the YMCA and Uprising will take you through induction. The YMCA will ensure that you can safely put on your harness and use a Grigri belay device. Uprising will ensure that you can climb up/down safely and know how to be aware of your surroundings.
  3. Please be aware that your first day may be a little slow due to the induction, but be patient as you only have to do it on your first day (or if you haven't climbed in a few months)!
  4. YMCA provides harnesses and shoes for free to climbers, while at Uprising you have to hire shoes or climb in your own. You are able to climb in sneakers at either facility but climbing shoes are much preferred!

What Is The Cost?

  • YMCA: $10 entry + free shoes & harness ($90 for a 10 concession pass).
  • Uprising: $14 entry + $5 shoe hire (optional)
  •  A one-off sports levy of $20 will also be applied to all students' school accounts to cover administration costs.

Students MUST pay the facilities directly each time they attend. No money means no climbing.

What About Transport?
Due to the number of sports being run on Wednesday at Cashmere High School, there are no school vans available for rock climbing. However:

  1. By Car
Some teachers volunteer to help transport students to and from school. Year 9 and 10 students are usually prioritised for this transport, and seniors are usually asked if they can find their own way there. See the transport roster posted in WhatsApp.
  2. By Bus
There is no bus that goes directly from school to the YMCA Adventure Centre, however, the number 45 (Westmorland - City) stops outside the Rose Street entrance at 2.48 pm and students can get off on Colombo Street approximately 11 minutes walk from the gym.
  3. By Bike
It is a 15-minute bike ride (3.7km) to the YMCA so a very efficient way to get there. It is only another 5 minutes to Uprising. Meet at the flag pole to go with some other climbers!
  4. Parents
If you are a parent and are able to offer your son/daughter or other students transport on Wednesday, please either let Mr LeSueur know or organise it with your son/daughter and their friends. Any help here would be most appreciated!
