ABOUT US

Rugby Southland was first established in 1887 after splitting from Otago and continues to be the overarching administrators of rugby in Southland. With 32 clubs and over 5,000 participants, club representatives and administrators in the area, Rugby Southland’s role is to develop all aspects of rugby while supporting club development to help ensure their sustainability.

Rugby Southland is also home to the professional franchise, the SBS Bank Southland Stags, who play in the National Provincial Competition, the Bunnings NPC. All teams compete in their respective Premiership and Championship grades for the title of champions as well as the coveted Ranfurly Shield which we first held in 1920 with a win over Wellington beating them 17-6 and being the first South Island team to hold it.

The ongoing development of the game in Southland is assisted through delivering sessions, seminars and trainings for athletes, coaches, referees and administrators. Each role is vital to the running and success of the game and without them the level of rugby in Southland would not be achieved.
