HISTORY OF TE WERO

*  Te Wero taiaha was presented by Mr T.M.R Tomoana on behalf of the 28th Maori Battalion to Tamatea in 1972

*  The 28th Maori Battalion carried Te Wero to France, Germany, Italy and back - to salute their dead and to greet former enemies

*  The first tournament was played in Hastings in 1973 and was won by Mahia. Netball was also included

*  Tamatea and Mahia are the only original teams

*  Poho, Aotea, Waiau, Otane and Maraenui have come and gone over the years

*  Current challengers - Tamatea, Mahia, Nuhaka and Otane
