VMX RACING
caters for the Pre 1991 era machines. Riders can be whatever era they arrive in.
Any style of offroad motor cycle can compete at these events, but it must be prepared from era available stock.

PRE 1980 machines generally have air cooled motors, drum brakes and either twin shock or original non-linkage single shock rear suspension. Era cutoff is 31 Dec 1979.

PRE 1986 racers are as originally manufactured with single shock or drum brakes and any modifications, such as disc brakes, are disallowed unless proven OE. Era cutoff is 31 Dec 1985.

PRE 1991racers are as originally manufactured.

FLOW ON models will usually be allowed in race classes but should be pre arranged with organisers.
Flow on qualifying machines are released after 31 December of the year before the Class, such as 31 Dec 1990 for Pre 1991 racers, but having the same performance characteristics as those in the class - maybe only different plastics.

Juniors often get to compete on modern machines if they still meet basic twin shock criteria, but it does pay to check first as this rule varies depending on the race day

COMPETITION is 'in the spirit of classic racing', where gentlemanly conduct is enjoyed and promoted both on and off track.
VMX racing is both fun and competitive by its nature and the relatively non contact nature is actively promoted due to the somewhat delicate nature of the machines (and their riders).
Every rider knows that parts can be very hard to locate!
As awards are often made based on the overall package of presentation, style and results, first past the post may not win, and this encourages the efforts of all who turn out.

CLASSES can include the following and a real bonus of classic events are that racers can ride as many classes as they're able:
Smallbore (to 185cc 2 stroke or 250cc 4 stroke)
Midbore (250/2 or 400/4)
Open
Juniors (to 16) 185cc 2 Stroke or 250cc 4 stroke
Vets 50+
Pre 1975
Pre 1978
Evolution or Pre 1981 [Twin Shock or original Non-Linkage Suspension/Air Cooling/Drum Brakes]
Pre 1986 [as manufactured] Pre 1991

When you have a couple of bikes you can see that a full day's racing is almost guaranteed!

MAJOR VMX EVENTS during the year include...
- Waitangi weekend Old Thumpers in Pohara (Pre 1980 machines only due to track, carparking and event timetable restrictions)

1st weekend in May Ray Anderson Memorial and Club Champs

June to September Mainland Series

Vin Orr Memorial flat track club day July

CLUB DAYS are held during the year as either race or family days and appear on the site Calendar, as do the various nationwide classic race meetings.

RIDING GEAR of good quality is needed as the machines may be old but they aren't slow!
Boots with ankle support, helmet, goggles, body armour, gloves plus trousers (not shorts) and a long sleeved shirt

MEDICAL is always on site at club VMX events

MNZ LICENSES are not currently required as the Top of the South VMX Club has private insurance and are not affiliated to the national body (Motorcycling New Zealand - MNZ).
Modern events catering for classic bikes will require riders to be (MNZ Affiliated) Club Members and to either hold a Full or Club area Competition License or to purchase an MNZ One Event License to be able to race.
Note: As a MNZ affiliated club member you may apply for a MNZ Associate Membership and this includes two OEL.

JOIN IN THE FUN - Even if you don't want to come and race, we always appreciate a look at your pride and joy, or a cheering squad on the sidelines, as these events are a great way to see how the early machines handle and a great way to have some family fun.
