Athletics is one of the major summer sports at Wellington College. Many of our athletes compete regularly on a Saturday afternoon at Newtown Park. Athletes can compete either by joining a club or competing in their school singlet under the Wellington College banner. We offer coaching in all disciplines: Sprinting, Throwing, Jumping, Hurdles and Middle Distance. We also welcome athletes of all abilities and experience.
In addition to the NZSS Championships at the end of the year, there are also the North Island Championships and the Wellington Regionals. Many athletes also compete in the National Club Championships.
The major local focus is the McEvedy Shield Meet, where the College competes against St Pats Town, St Pats Silverstream, and Rongotai Colleges. 2024 saw McEvedy take place for the 101st time and Wellington College won for an unprecedented 9th year in a row.
