Sailing 

Welcome to Wellington College Sailing

At WC we compete in Secondary Schools 420 Team Racing organised by the New Zealand Team Sailing Association (http://nzteamsailing.co.nz/).  Secondary schools around the country put forward a 3-boat team of 7-8 sailors (1 helm and 1 crew in each boat) and compete against other schools in a 3-boat versus 3-boat format.  If there are sufficient numbers, schools can entre more than one team.

At WC, sailing runs through the full year with training and team selection during terms 2 and 3, followed by more dedicated training for the competing team in term 4 and competition in term 1.  Nationals take place in the April school holidays.  In the 2024/25 season WC took first place in the bronze fleet at nationals!

Each week we train at Evans Bay Yacht Club alongside at least one other team, for example Scots College.  The programme caters to those brand new to sailing through to expert, from years 9-13.  While training takes place at Evans Bay, our team is made up of sailors from different clubs around the region.  You do not have to belong to a sailing club to start training or compete, though club sailing is a great way to sharpen your skills.  

Training is run by TRIYA (Tup Radford Intercollegiate Yachting Academy).  During terms 2 and 3 TRIYA offers team sailing coaching every other Sunday, leading to team selection at the end of term 3.  For those that want more time on the water they also offer winter fleet racing every Saturday - coaching in the morning followed by racing in the afternoon.  In terms 4 and 1 TRIYA offer learn-to-sail on Mondays after school.  Also in terms 4 and 1 the competing team trains on Wednesdays after school, with extra sessions on Saturdays or Sunday as needed.  If you are brand new to sailing it's best to start with learn to sail in term 4 or 1. 

Please note that registration for WC Sailing is through TRIYA (https://www.triya.co.nz/), not through the usual WC Sporty registration links, however, you also need to let the school know you are joining by emailing MattLangworthy@gmail.com.

TRIYA provide the boats, and some life jackets, helmets and spray jackets are available to borrow.  Students need their own gear to stay warm and dry, for example a wetsuit or sailing gear.
