**NZRR SM RACE REPORT**

Well done to all on what was a cracking weekend at New Zealand's most legendary relay.

* After being greeted at Christchurch Airport by a frighteningly hairless James List, the team were whisked to our luxury suites at the YMCA for a team meeting run by the Grand Poobah himself, Club President Ian Sussex. Following a stirring address the team did their best to get some shut eye on the eve of the 2013 NZ Road Relays.

* Any hopes for a sleep-in, however, would be dashed in the early hours of Saturday morning with a series of agitated phone calls from a wide awake Malcolm Hicks. If Hicks' aim was to make sure Will had plenty of time to warm up he was successful, and our bleary eyed team watched the sun rise at the sign of the Takahe.

*lap 1 &2: Several hours after our arrival the race kicked off with Will Harris on lap 1. whle to the untrained eye it may of appeared that Will was having a tough day at the office, the Auckland rep unselfishly sacrificed his own performance in a clever bid to fire up the normally unflappable Malcolm Hicks. The strategy worked to perfection and by the time the baton changed hands Hicks had turned scarlet with rage. For the next 32 minutes and 30 seconds Hicks vented his anger on the 10.5km strip of tarmac to record the fastest lap of the day before hanging over to Liam Scopes.

*lap 3&4: At 33 years of age and with a decorated career to his name one might have excused Liam Scopes if he'd sat back, rested on his laurels and cruised through 10km to celebrate his birthday. But this is Liam Scopes - a man who eats pressure for breakfast and takes no prisoners on the road. After a gutsy run holding 3rd place for the Snipers, Scopes passed the flax-stalk to late addition Andrew Haigh, who was promptly overtaken by the flying pakman Nick Pannett. Fortunately losses were contained, and by the time the stalk changed hands to Sam Kidd on lap 5, Wesley was 30 seconds down on Olympian Dale Warrander.

Lap 5&6: Despite his rock'n'roll travel schedule which saw him arrive from the Gold Coast the day before the race Skidd battled hard and kept the snipers withing striking distance of a medal, finishing lap 5 and handing on to our uphill specialist. When it comes to bleeding mustard, no one bleeds more than Andy Small, so after beginning 2 and a half minutes behind 3rd place it was no suprise to see the Deisel Truck barreling around the 14 switchbacks to propel the snipers into 3rd place and put the second medal in two years in sight.

*lap 7: With a haircut what would not look out of place in certain right-wing extremist fractions of Christchuch society there was little doubt that Jimmy List meant business. After driving himself to the start line in his red Mustang the relays Maestro was primed for a trademark Listy performance and he didn't disappoint. While the details of his lap are murky (no witnesses have come forward) based on his description he was lucky not to self combust as he plummeted down the final 4km descent while the rest of the team waited at the pub at the bottom of the hill.

* lap 8: Despite his proximity to the pub, T-Payne had a sobering proposition ahead of him. Lap 8 is regarded as one of the toughest relay laps in the country, and TP had been bleating for weeks that he wasn't a hill runner. After Listy passed the flax-stalk to Payne, the club attorney make a mockery of his self assessment, recording the third fastest time of the day to bring home Wesley's second consecutive national bronze medal.

Special thanks go out to Tom Hunt, our devoted driver who may well have been hammering out one of the laps had he not been sick.

Also who could forget Ian 'big suss' Sussex who organised the entire trip while also managing the 9th place junior team and running in the 6th place masters team - a busy weekend, thanks Ian.

Sat 14 September Wesley Honeypot Mile
Venue: Epsom Methodist Church Hall
Conal Wilson took out this years Mile, 4m46, in a close battle with Michael Dawson and Andy Stewart. "Conal got it by a chest hair" according to Maria Kroonenberg, the official finish line photo finish operator. (She has great eye sight!) Next home and first Master was the President. First junior runner was Zaria Ireland in 5m51 and then Olly in 6m08. Joshua Rowbotham again cleaned up his ever slowing father with a 4 year old record time of 9m29 an improvement of 4.5 minutes from the Beehive at the start of last year - how fast can this boy go?

Sat 3 August NZ XC Champs Hamilton
Malcolm Hicks has won the 2013 NZ Cross Country Championship. Always at the head of the field it wasn't until about 1km to go in the 12k championship that Malcolm put the hammer down to shake the leading four runners apart. His final break was up the tight steep hill 750m from home and clearing away on the downhill and sweep around to the finish straight. Checking with Barry Magee (Wesley club member for 50+ years) he confirms that Malcolm is the first Wesley runner to win this title in our 80 year history - awesome! and our congratulations to Malcolm. Proud parents & Granddad were on hand to enjoy the moment.

Congratulations also to Liam Scopes(17th) & William Harris(23rd) who also won gold medals in the Auckland 6 Senior Man Team (along with Malcolm).

Other results; Zaria Ireland was 2nd in the U13 Girls. Heidi Robinson 17th GU15, Conal Wilson 9th in the MU18, Finn WIlson 5th in the MU20 and Tom Hunt 32nd in the Senior Men.

15 June NZ SS XC Champs - Christchurch
Another National Title For Wilson & Wesley.

Finn Wilson won the Senior Boys NZ Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships held on a fast, undulating and challenging Halswell Quarry course in Christchurch on Saturday 15th June.

Finn follows up his 3rd place result in 2012 with a very impressive controlled performance in this years 6000m championship. With a huge field of 245 athletes on the start line for the Senior Boys race, Finn positioned himself perfectly and was in a lead pack of 10 – 15 runners over the first 2km lap. By the end of lap 2 Finn was very well positioned and sitting in the top 3 before making what turned out to be a smart and decisive move with just over 1 km to go. Heading into the long up hill portion of the final lap, Finn increased his tempo and as a result opened up a gap on the chase pack which was not to be closed, crossing the line in 18:09.00. Finn was also named in the NZ Secondary Schools Athletic Association’s Senior Cross Country Team to compete in the Australian Championships in Launceston Saturday 31 August, Sunday 1 September 2013

18-21 January 2013 - Youth Olympic event, Sydney
Congratulations to Michael Dawson who picked up a Bronze in the U18 800m Youth Olympic event in Sydney on Saturday 20 January with a new PB of 1:54.45.  He was meant to run 1500m on the Friday but due to 47degree record temps, all Friday events combined with Saturdays so he withdrew from the 1500 to focus on the 800.
