As another successful U16 season comes to a close with 4 teams and 55 players participating in U16 Nationals this year and a season win for our U16 Tridents, we’re excited about the talent and growth we’re seeing in our water polo teams. In only our third year, Atlantis has grown very quickly with more than 200 players in 22 teams across 5 age groups. It is thanks to the tireless support of our Club Captain, Coordinators, Coaches and community that we’ve been so successful.
This exponential growth, combined with last week’s announcement that our Club Captain and Head Coach, Angie Winstanley-Smith has won the top spot as Water Polo New Zealand Senior Women’s Head Coach, has enabled the Club to attract additional talent to its coaching and management ranks. Atlantis is pleased to announce the addition of Eelco Uri to the Atlantis team.
A dual Olympian playing for The Netherlands men’s water polo team and a seasoned water polo coach, Eelco will be a familiar face to many in the community. He spent 10 years working for Water Polo New Zealand in high performance running the Pan Pacs and Youth Women World Champs as well as the New Zealand National League. Some of our girls may even remember him from the 9 Blue Academy which he ran at Dio several years ago. Recently returned from Australia, Eelco’s depth of knowledge and breadth of experience in management and coaching will be a huge asset as we build on the growth and success of Atlantis in the coming year. Welcome to the team Eelco!
Never a dull moment at Atlantis, we head into a competitive term with our U14 teams led by Kirsten Hudson and her coaches. We wish them all the best!
