What am I actually doing? 

Those of us who seek help for our ADHD will feel that no matter what we do, it’s not enough; that we should have done more, or better. Or if we get something accomplished, we may think, I should have done it a week ago, dismissing the achievement. After what may be many years of feeling like we don’t quite measure up or are failing to meet our potential, this notion becomes a repeated thought habit that isn’t necessarily true. And if there is some truth to it, it’s seldom the whole truth.

What am I telling myself?

We are often telling ourselves that we should have done more or better when we may be doing just fine, and certainly the best we can. The second awareness is to notice, what am I telling myself? Is it really true? Also importantly, how am I speaking to myself? Is it with curiosity and self-compassion?

What am I being told?

In previous blogs I talked about noticing and becoming aware of what we do, what we say to ourselves about it and how we say it; is it kind and is it true? The messages or “tapes”, that play in our head are often based on things we heard or understood during childhood.

What are my intentions?

Our intentions underpin everything we do. Intentions stem from core values, and we often don’t think much about either of those things. Having ADHD can make it a struggle to make those intentions, subconscious or conscious, match our outcomes. ​How we might begin to change that is to become more aware of our core values and by extension, our intentions.

Am I giving myself enough credit?

What if simply pausing to feel good lead to feeling good more often? Many of us with ADHD, have resorted to creating inner stress to spur ourselves onward, as a means of compensating for feeling undermotivated. This is understandable but it isn’t necessary.
