Bowls3Five is Everywhere
The TV version has begun, the National Interclub Bowls3Five preliminary competition has started in some Centres, some clubs running a Bowls3Five competition to cater for their casual players
Last night was interesting, a few players looked a bit nervous, some may have wanted their bowls to go a little further or pull up sooner, however I am picking these hiccups will disappear as the competition progresses especially as the players get to know the green and each other better and get used to the surroundings.
It is good to hear that some clubs with Sky opened their clubrooms, to enable members and friends to watch the game, support their favourite team, understand this new format.
Bowls New Zealand are keen to introduce this format to the casual bowler, it is fast moving – players don’t get to stand around too long pondering their next shot and the game is over in about an hour. This is what our casual players are asking for so let’s use the televised game to encourage more casual use of our clubs. We do have some signage/flags available.
If you are playing this format in the evening or contemplating doing so
- Let me know so we can discuss what signage would suit your club.
- Let me know if you are hosting casual Twilight Bowls3Five as your event will be advertised during the televised event
- Tell me your story about what you are doing and who is playing
Attached are the CoP’s for the Twilight version for your guidance, you will note that they are a bit more relaxed, remember this game is meant to be action and fun, short and sharp and easy to play.
TWILIGHT SOCIAL 3Five
The FORMAT:
- Two bowl triples - 3 players each deliver two bowls, per end.
- Two sets of five ends.
- A one end tie-breaker end to decide winner (if both sets are drawn or one team wins one set each).
- The Jack is placed wherever the team wants to from the mat (minimum 23m).
- Jack in the ditch (or outside boundaries of rink) is re-spotted on the 2mtr mark.
- Closest bowl to the jack wins one point and additional closest bowls from the same team score additional points.
- Each team gets to have one Powerplay per game. The team that calls the powerplay scores double on a powerplay for that end, if they win the end. The powerplay is to be nominated before the first bowl of that end. No powerplay permitted in the tie-breaker end.
- First to Play (delivers jack and takes first turn) based upon the toss of a coin. From then on, first to play is the winner of the previous end. The first to play in a tie-breaker end shall be determined based upon the toss of a coin.
The COMPETITION
- Games last approximately 60-75 minutes.
- Six to eight week season.
- Weeknight Evening.
- Substitutions permitted.
- Scoring
- Game = 3 points
- Set = 1 point (0.5 for a drawn set)
- Net total shots also count for ladder positions.
- Matching uniforms encouraged.
- Bowls will be supplied by the club. Own bowls may be used.

Bowls NZ is currently holding a survey on a proposal to introduce events where the winners of each Centre’s Champion of Champion (Singles, Pairs, Fours) events will play against each other. These would take the place of the discontinued “Pathways”. The survey is available on Bowls NZ website & Facebook. Please take a moment to complete this survey as your opinion is important.
