AUCKLAND RUGBY PLAYING OPPORTUNITIES FOR GIRLS AND WOMEN


Auckland Rugby Union has a variety of programmes available to players at different stages - some focus on participation and development, others on performance.  We offer both contact and non-contact versions of the game for all to enjoy. Whatever your focus or experience level is we have an opportunity for you!

Women in Rugby Week 2023 - 24 - 29 April

Women In Rugby Week is back for a third year. We are constantly striving to innovate and grow our community game. We have many activities and events lined up for Women in Rugby Week to celebrate further and inspire female rugby involvement. 
We encourage our community to come along to the below events as we celebrate what is going to be a massive year for female rugby in Auckland and New Zealand.

Wednesday 26th April – Kicking Masterclass

After the successful launch of our Scrum Masterclass this year, we are kicking off Women in Rugby Week with a Kicking Masterclass for those wanting to upskill and learn from the best in the business. Aimed at secondary girls and club women players and their coaches. Led by NPC coach Jono Hickey,  supported by Black Ferns captain Ruahei Dumant, Storm players Patricia Maliepo & Katelyn Vahaakolo and rugby legend Brent Ward. A fantastic opportunity to gain some amazing insights and learn from the best.

Venue: Carlton Juniors Rugby Club, 2 Puriri Drive, Epsom

Time: 6 pm-7:30 pm

Thursday, 27th April – Women in Governance Evening

A special evening celebrates our women and those aspiring to be in governance. Guest speakers include Auckland Rugby President Fiao’o Fa’amausili, Auckland Rugby Director Amanda Cox and a special guest from Women on Boards NZ. A chance to hear insights from the best and network with other women in governance. Drinks and nibbles will be provided.

Venue: Barbarians Lounge, Level 6, Eden Park

Time: 6:30 pm-8:30 pm

Saturday 29th April – Junior Girls Festival Day

Set to be the largest festival of girls' rugby in New Zealand, the Junior Girls Festival Day is a celebration for all our junior female players. Hosted by Varsity Rugby Club at Colin Maiden Park, teams will be playing two shortened games over the morning whilst also being able to take part in the fun activities and activations off the field; these include:

  • Special guests from the Black Ferns and Storm
  • Getting photos with "Nancy", the Rugby World Cup Trophy
  • 360  Camera
  • Tackle license station
  • Passing Cage
  • Blow-up obstacle course
  • Barfoot & Thompson Fun Zone

Venue: Auckland University Rugby Club, Colin Maiden Park, St Johns

Time: 9 am-12 pm

Women’s Rugby


​​​​​​​Club Rugby: Premier Women's 15s, Development 10s.

The club rugby season runs from April-June.

If you are interested in playing Rugby Sevens, the season runs from November through to January.  Our main event in the sevens calendar is the Auckland Club 7’s Championship. There are several different tournaments in Auckland, New Zealand or abroad that club teams can also choose to play in.

University Rugby:  Auckland University of Technology and Auckland University provides the opportunity to compete in the New Zealand Universities Seven’s Tournament. For more information, please get in touch with your tertiary provider directly.

REPRESENTATIVE RUGBY


Under 16

Auckland Rugby selects two regional teams that play in a weekend tournament against other Provincial Unions around New Zealand. Girls under 16 as of the 1st January and attend a secondary school under the Auckland Rugby Union banner can qualify for this team.


Under 18

Auckland Rugby selects two regional teams (South/East and Central/West). These teams will compete in the Northern Regional Zone Competition against teams from other Provincial Unions around New Zealand.


All Auckland Rugby Secondary School players (15s, 10s and 7s) are eligible for selection into these teams. Players will be nominated by their school to attend trials.


Storm / Thunder Senior XV

  • The Auckland Storm and the Auckland Sevens are our two flagship women’s teams which our girls/women aspire to be a part of.
  • Clubs will recommend players they want to be considered for these teams and they are invited to trial.
  • Auckland Storm have a proud history and compete in the National Competition – Farah Palmer Cup.
  • Auckland Thunder is our development team which feeds into our Auckland Storm
