Following the first stage of public voting for the Lotto NRFL Awards, the second stage has now opened as the search to find the competition’s top performers heats up.
A total of 45 players across the four divisions of the Lotto NRFL were selected as the best in their respective teams by public voting which closed on October 20.
Stage two of the process pits those winners against each other within their respective divisions to find the four Player of the Year award winners.
Past All Whites feature in the Lotto NRFL Premier Division vote with Tim Payne (Eastern Suburbs) and Cameron Howieson (Three Kings United) both picked as the best from their sides while a duo of Futsal Whites have also made the list in Marvin Eakins (Manurewa) and Dylan Manickum (Waitakere City).
2016 Lotto NRFL Premier Player of the Year Mario Ilicich is again in the running for the top accolade while League and Cup Champion Captain Jo Dawkins has also made the cut as Onehunga Sports’ best.
Luke Jorgensen (Bay Olympic), Yuki Ohtsuka (Birkenhead United), Mark Jones (Glenfield Rovers), Dylan Stansfield (East Coast Bays) David Brown (Forrest Hill Milford) and Hamilton Wanderer’s Michael Built round out the nominees for the Premier League’s Player of the Year.
In the Lotto NRFL Women’s Premier Division a quartet of players have backed up last years impressive seasons to be included again. They are: Michaela Foster (Claudelands Rovers), Nadia Olla (Norwest United), Rebecca O’Neill (Western Springs) and former Papatoetoe striker Britney Cunningham-Lee who this year has been voted as Hamilton Wanderers’ best.
Rounding out the Women’s finalists are current and former New Zealand age group internationals in Aneka Mittendorf (Forrest Hill Milford), Tayla O’Brien (Eastern Suburbs), Rebecca Burrows (Three Kings United) and Northland’s Nicole Stratford. Kate Loye was picked as Glenfield Rovers’ best.
Hone Fowler, Captain of the Lotto NRFL Division One Champions, is Manukau City’s representative while the top three goal scorers in the league also feature. Melville United’s Marc Evans scored a formidable 33 goals while Ross Langworthy (North Shore United) and Adam Dickinson (Western Springs) notched 24 and 21 respectively.
Jason Mann (Ellerslie), Salesh Kumar (Franklin United), Dan Cyra (Hibiscus Coast), Daniel Campbell (Metro), Mark Withers (Oratia United), Tom Konusi (Mt Albert Ponsonby), Raymond How (Tauranga City United) and Shane Tanner of Waitemata complete the nominees for the first division.
The top three goal scorers also feature in the Second Division nominees with net busters Sanni Issa (Mangere United), Mitch Miller (Ngongotaha) and Emiliano Candia (Waiheke United) all included. Albany United Sahadev Pokhrel made the cut alongside League winning captain Jarrod young.
Onehunga Mangere had a season to forget but it’s their top goal scorer Carl Bickerton who won the most votes for the relegated side while Calvin Lee was voted Papatoetoe’s best. The selection is rounded off by the free scoring Mark Ruddell of Northland, Claudelands’ Federico Marquez, Christopher Clark (Papakura), Thomson Nkoy (Takapuna) and Rhys Caples of Te Atatu.
In the coach of the year category, those who led their side to title-winning glory in the men’s divisions have been signalled out. Hiroshi Miyazawa, who led Onehunga Sports to a league and cup double, will fight it out with Daniel Rattray who guided his team to Division Two glory. Kevin Fallon makes the cut for guiding Manukau City to back to back promotions and rounds out the list with New Zealand Football Women’s Knockout Cup winning coach Andrew Clay of Glenfield Rovers.
The Lotto NRFL Official of the Year award winner is selected by the league’s referee appointments panel based on reviews by appointed assessors.
