Football Foundation Kate Sheppard Cup Round Two
Saturday 2 June:
Making their first appearance of the season at Kiwitea Street, Central United were looking to make a statement in their Round Two fixture of the Kate Sheppard Cup against Onehunga Sports.
The pair last met at St Peter’s College a month ago, where Onehunga Sports took home the points after defeating Central United by 4-2.
This time around, Sports were looking to repeat matters, and they did so, taking an early lead when Central United goal keeper, Chelsea Cadwallader struggled to keep out Priscilla Duncan’s venomous corner, which subsequently ended up in the back of the net.
Central began to bounce back, with Olivia Vellekoop and Rita Whitfield both coming close to finding an equaliser for Central, however, former Football Ferns goal keeper, Rebecca Rolls kept Central at bay.
In the second half, Onehunga began with all the forward momentum, pinning back an unsecure Central United back line. Eventually, the pressure paid off, with Nicole Stratford putting Onehunga 2-0 up after her shot was neatly slotted into the bottom corner of the net.
Stratford nearly made it three when her side were awarded a penalty in the 63rd minute, but Cadwallader was up to the mark, saving the shot from the spot with a powerful left arm.
With Onehunga clearly dominating the second half, Katie Duncan rounded off a pleasant afternoon for Sports, with her 81st minute long-range strike, which flew over the top of Cadwallader and into the back of the net.
Coaches Comments:
Geoff Brogan (Central United):
“Well I thought we were well in the game for most of the 90 minutes, they got a lucky goal off the corner, that was a bit of miscommunication between the near post and the goal keeper, but take that out of it, we were still in the first half, even though they were mostly playing in our half.”
“We didn’t take our chances, we only had two or three shots on goal and when you’ve only got a few chances you’ve got to really make the most of them.”
“We had a few players out today, which probably hurt us a little, certainly going forward, but we have a good team, we’re building for the league, and we’ll only get better out of this loss.”
Katie Duncan (Onehunga Sports):
“It’s been a long time since I had a cup game in New Zealand, so I was quite pumped for it, and the team were too, so it’s great to get the win.”
“Central played really well in the first half, they kept us out, but we did manage to get a goal in the first half, we didn’t have much going forward and they did well to close our options down, but I thought my girls did well to get the early goal in the second half and I thought that was a little bit of a turning point for us, and for them.”
“You could tell it lifted us up and maybe put a little more doubt in their heads based on where the match was going and that’s what it felt like on the field to get that early girl in the second half, that’s what did it for us.”
