Timaru Yacht and Power Boat members have been organising this very successful racing event for many years now. A large tent is erected in the camping area adjacent the boat ramp along with additional facilities including power for lighting, toilets, kitchen and yes, even a shower.
While regulations have tightened over the years these events have attracted a large contingent of trailer yachts from Southland, Otago and Canterbury. Some yachts have also ventured from other more distant locations.
Based at the Otematata Boat harbour, it is only a short motor/sail down the neck of the lake to the racing area. The dam has provided superb deep waters with a large sailing area of fresh water sailing. Waitaki Valley breezes usually kick in during the afternoon adding to the challenge of this event generating many stories after the days racing.
