A fantastic three days of competition ended on Sunday afternoon at the New Zealand National Championships, as the finals played out in the Ray Phillips Hall, in Counties Manukau. It was not all plain sailing for the seeds, with a number of upsets occuring throughout the draws, leading to some thrilling finals between unlikely opponents.
Men’s Singles
Oscar Guo of North Harbour has been crowned back-to-back Men’s Singles National Champion with a hard fought 14-21 21-16 21-17 victory over two-time Champion Tjitte Weistra (WKO). The plate competition was won by Daxxon Vong (AK) 21-5 21-8 over Vincent Tong (AK).
Women’s Singles
Runner-up in 2015, Sally Fu (AK) secured her first National Title with a 13-21 21-15 21-17 win against Deborah Yin (NH). Jacqueline Yu defeated Rebecca Fong 21-11 21-19 to win the plate.
Men’s Doubles
In his second final of the day Tjitte Weistra along with partner Alastair Gatt (WKO) claimed the Men’s Doubles National Title with a 21-14 21-15 win over Edwin Lau and Viraf Vazifdar (NH). This ended a strong competition, with both finalists fighting through 3 game semi- and quarter-finals to gain their place in the final.
Women’s Doubles
Jinah Kim and Anona Pak (NH) won a tight 21-18 18-21 21-17 final against Susannah Leydon-Davis (WKO) and Danielle Tahuri (WTK).
Mixed Doubles
Maika Phillips and Anona Pak (NH) took the Mixed Doubles final 23-21 21-19 against Auckland’s Dhanny Oud and Jasmin Ng. In route to the final, Phillips and Pak avenged their 2015 final loss to Kevin Dennerly-Minturn (AK) and Danielle Tahuri with a 19-21 21-18 21-12 victory.
