New Zealand U19 Championships
In the final Championship of the Badminton New Zealand Calendar, the nation’s top junior players fought to gain National Champion status. In a busy final day for many players, Josefine Jensen, Oscar Guo and Dacmen Vong each won two National titles.
Boys Singles
Following his Triple Crown at the New Zealand U17 Championships', Oscar Guo (NH) succeeded in winning his first U19 Singles title. Guo defeated Doubles partner Dacmen Vong (AK) 21-9 21-13. The Plate was won by Waitakere’s Alan Lo 21-16 21-9 against Caleb Lay (STH).
Girls Singles
Josefine Jensen (WKO) became U19 National Champion with her first win over Sally Fu (AK) 21-16 23-21. The win continues a strong run of form for Josefine, having already won Singles at the U17 Championships four days prior. At just 12 years old and the youngest player in the Championships, Roanne Apalisok (WTK) won the Plate after a 19-21 21-12 21-14 victory over Polly Wong (AK).
Boys Doubles
Oscar Guo and Dacmen Vong beat Edward Lau (NH) and Rodger Yang (AK) 21-18 21-14 to combine for their fourth National Doubles title. This follows wins for the pairing at both U15 (2014) and U17 (2015/16) age groups. Alan Lo and Andrew Rouse (WTK) won the Plate 21-13 21-11.
Girls Doubles
Sally Fu and Chrstine Zhang (WTK) beat Josefine Jensen and Tamara Otene (NH) 21-13 21-12. As in the Boys Doubles, Fu and Zhang have won four National Championships together, with previous wins in U15 (2013) and U17 (2014/15). The Plate was won by Apisara Lertwisettheerakul (CAN) and Selena Wu (NH) over sisters Ella Smith (STH) and Zoe Smith (STH) 21-17 21-19.
Mixed Doubles
Dacmen Vong (AK) and Josefine Jensen (WKO) won their first U19 National title following a 24-22 21-19 win over Oscar Guo (NH) and Apisara Lertwisettheerakul. The plate was won by Jasmanjot Virk (WKO) and Selena Wu over Matthew Graham (WKO) and Celine Shao (AK) 21-18 21-18.
Whittaker’s Umpire of the Championship
The Umpire of the Championship was awarded to Selena Wu following consistent umpiring throughout all three days of the Championships.
