Baseball New Zealand are excited to be stepping back out on to the plate and competing on the international stage, for the first time since January 2020. After a two-year hiatus, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Junior Diamondblacks (U-23 team) are gearing up to travel to Canberra, Australia to compete in the WBSC Oceania qualifying event – taking place between 22nd and 25th of April.
Baseball New Zealand does wish to highlight that there was a very short turnaround time from receiving the invitation to attend, to confirming attendance, identifying the campaign management team and selecting the players. The Coaches have been selected based on their experience playing and/or coaching at the international, collegiate and/or professional levels of our sport. They bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the representative team travelling to Canberra. Baseball New Zealand National Coach Development Manager, Kris Richards acknowledged that “the previous experience of the selected coaches will offer fitting support and inspiration for our players who have the aspirations and ability to play at the next level.”
The winner of the upcoming April qualifier will go on to participate in the U-23 World Cup, held in Taipei, Taiwan in October 2022.
Baseball New Zealand looks forward to announcing the Junior Diamondblacks U-23 playing roster on Friday 8th April.
