Auckland Masters Athletics Championships 7th and 14th February 2016.

Sixteen club masters took part in the AMA Championships over two very hot weekend's at Mt Smart. The number of AMA members who entered was disappointing with the National Championships only 2 weeks away only 47 entered over the two days.

A very strong headwind down the home straight on both days meant that no fast times were recored in the sprint events and jumps, this also affected the other track events.  The sixteen athletes won 46 titles between them and set seven club records W55 Carolyn Smith 800m; M35 Iain McGowen Javelin [now close to the 40m mark] M45 Dave McMillan Shot; M45 Trevor Wilson 110mH and 400m; M70 David Anstiss 300mH; 10000m and Shot.

Congratulations to all who took part or officiated over the two days.

Masters Membership on the rise + news updates

The masters section membership now stands at 47 which 41 are active in either T&F; Road and Cross country.  WHO will become our 50th master ? ?

A very warm welcome to the club new masters who have joined in the past months; Mark Lambert; Shane Mannix; Andy Richarson; Ivan Smith and Elena Vinogradova.

Results:

2015 ANZ Road Championships, 5th September Tauranga.

Running for the Auckland Center; Womens 5k W45 Sue Parcell 4th and 2nd overall masters team.

4th October AMA warm up meeting, Mt Smart.

10 Bays masters attended the meeting which included 5 of the new members, unfortunately the electronic timing failed, so only a few hand times were taken which was a big shame for our new sprinters. New member Andy Richardson set 3 new M50 club records in the Long Jump; Shot and Javelin.

Oceania T&F Championships; Rarotonga 5th - 10th October.

105 New Zealand masters entered the meeting,  three Bays members made the trip and won 9 Gold; 4 Silver and 1 Bronze.

Gold Coast based member Althea Mackie carried on where she left off at the World Championships in Lyon winning 4 Golds.

W45 Althea Mackie: 1st Weight throw; Weight Pentathlon; Discus; Hammer.2nd Javelin; Shot. 3rd 60m sprint.

W50 Elena Vinogradova: 1st Triple Jump.

W70: Christine Waring: 1st 60m -100m; NZ team 4x100m and Distance relay; 2nd 200m -400m.

AMA Gideon Tait meeting, 18th October Mt Smart.

10 members took part in the meeting, and this time the electronic timing was working and some good early season times were posted in the track events.  Two club records were set, M35 Iain McGowan Long Jump and M50 Andy Richardson pushed his new Shot Put record set at the last meeting out to 11.08m.

In the G T trophy, athletes must do 4 events - 1track; 1field; 1 jump + any one of the others 3 events, the results are then based on the athletes actual age on the day of the competition and then the WMA age gradings calculators is used to find the winner with the highest percentage.

Anne Deleiros W67 was the overall winner with an average of 81.71% per event, 2nd was Bays Anne Goulter W52  74.39% and 4th Andy Richardson M50 64.56%.

A good start to the new season, with a AMA meeting on 8th November at Mt Smart and then at the end of November is the North Islands T&F Championships held at Mt Smart, Auckland Masters Athletics are the hosts this year.

Entries for the above events can be found on the AMA website, also all the results can be found.

One Gold and Two Bronze for Bays masters at World Champs.

WMA Track & Field Championships, Lyon France 4th - 16th August 2015

The meeting attracted 8059 entries from 98 countries including 38 from New Zealand, it was the 3rd largest championships ever. Athletes were greeted with very high tempertures up to 39 degrees for the first 5  days and dropped to mid 30's for the remainder of the meeting. With four tracks being spread out over Lyon it was a bit of a misson to get to them, most of the NZ & Australian team had to take two metros and a bus to get to the main stadium, however the metro system worked well with trains running every 4 minutes. With the huge number of athletes some of the track age groups had 12 to 14 heats, even in the 75/80 ages needed 4/5 heats! In the throwing events some ages were split into a/b/c groups. With the meeting being held in August NZ athletes were at a disadvantage to the European and Northern Hemisphere athletes who had just had their national championships two weeks earlier, for most of the NZ athletes it was their first competition since March.
Eight Bays entered and top honours go to Althea Mackie winning the Gold in the W45 Weight throw and Bronze in the Hammer these were Althea's first ever World medals. Althea who lives on the Gold Coast and represented Australia and was the secretary of Auckland Masters Athletics until she left a few years ago, however she still retains her NHB membership.  Chrissie Waring who was defending her W70 100m title found very strong European and Australian opposition in all her races, however Chrissie picked up Bronze in the 100m and was 5th in the 200m and 4th in the 400m.  Tui Ashe W60 performed well in the hepthalon but was held back in the throwing events with a shoulder injury she picked up a few months ago, Tui battled on and finished 7th overall.  Michael Craig M50 had over 70 athletes entered in his 800m age group and was placed 33rd overall.  Anne Deleiros W65 was 4th [again] in the triple jump and 7th in the long jump, Anne made the 100m final for the first time and had her best times for 100/200m for three seasons. Scott Dorset M45 in his 100m 73 sprinters took part and Scott was placed 42nd and was quite happy with his race as he has had injury and health problems and has missed nearly three seasons.  Iain McGowan M35 who resumed to the triple jump at the beginning of the year was pleased to make the final 8 and increased his club record, the first and second athletes were over 15 meters.  Carolyn Smith W55 who has been winning over the x/c this season when temperture's were mild, in her 5000m heat she was greeted with the hottest day of the meeting 39.2c, unfortunately Carolyn suffered and failed to make the final. By the time of her 1500m races the heat had dropped a bit and Carolyn finished 9th in the final and set a new Masters Auckland record. I myself picked up an achilles strain 6 weeks before and decided to withdraw from all the sprint events.

The NZ team returned home with 6 Gold; 4 Silver and 3 Bronze plus many area records and PB's.

Congratulations to everyone who took part and athletes will now be looking towards to the 2016 World Championships being held a bit nearer to New Zealand  in Perth next October.
