Hawkes Bay – Manawatu Challenge played on 07/11/2021.

This year saw the implementation of a challenge tournament between Hawkes Bay & Manawatu at both Senior Men & Women and 1-8yr Men & Women Development level.

The seniors played at Dannevirke and the 1-8yr Development squad played at Waipukurau on 07/11/2021.

In spite of some pretty unseasonal weather leading up to the event both greens played well and were a credit to the respective greens staff.

This event was dedicated to two stalwarts of Bowls Hawkes Bay & Manawatu, being Colleen Ferrick and Joyce Osborne QSM.

Colleen’s resume is outstanding with Colleen being well known in the NZ bowling community, having represented NZ at the 1994 Commonwealth Games and 1993 Asia Pacific Championships winning 1 Silver & 2 Bronze Medals. Colleen also has 30 Center Championships, 42 Senior Club Titles and 1 NZ Championship Title.

Colleen was also past President of the Heretaunga Club (now Club Hastings), past President of Bowls Hawkes Bay and currently a life member of Bowls Hawkes Bay.

Joyce Osborne’s resume is also impressive having played for NZ at the 1982 Commonwealth Games and 1985/1987 Asia Pacific Championships winning 2 Gold & 2 Silver Medals, amassing 111 appearances for NZ.

Joyce also has 44 Center Championships, over 50 Club Titles, 2 NZ Singles Championship Titles along with being the Past President of the Women’s Association before amalgamation and past Manager of the NZ Team.

Both Hawkes Bay and Manawatu felt that these incredible ladies deserve recognition for all they have contributed to our respective centres and Bowls NZ, so the naming of the trophies in their honour seemed the appropriate way to do this.

The day was a great success with Hawkes Bay just pipping Manawatu in both sections to take home the 1-8yr Development “Colleen Ferrick” Challenge Trophy and the Senior “Joyce Osborne” Challenge Trophy.

Both Hawkes Bay and Manawatu Centres would like to thank Colleen and Joyce for their contribution to our organisations and to Bowls NZ.
