A 'CLASSIC' WEEKEND - at NAPIER & HERETAUNGA

Two Classics this weekend - a ‘Classic’ is so named when all disciplines are played in an event, e.g. Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours – and the overall points are calculated in various ways to find the eventual winner.

Bowls Napier Classic:   Raelene reports that ‘The Cis Winstanley Memorial Classic’ 24/25 September, will be running with 18 teams this year.  There will be no teams from outside HB competing (probably because of inclement weather warranted cancellation of the event last year).

The late Cis Winstanley was a member of the Marewa BC (which merged with Napier, Wairere and Port Ahuriri to form Bowls Napier).   She was without doubt, the greatest bowler eve from Hawke’s Bay, and was voted onto the NZ Sports Hall of Fame in 1997 - she won 17 National titles, 2 world gold medals (150 titles in all).

The Tournament this year has a good mix of teams from very experienced - to 1-5 year players preparing for the Wanganui Representative Hexagonal 1st & 2nd October.

Ross Morgan Property Brokers Bowls Heretaunga Classic, 24/25 September.  Dave writes that - due to only having eight rinks (we can only play indoors) the format is truncated from a full classic with 4 games of fours plus singles, both types of pairs and triples.  The winners will take home $1000 from a total prize pool of $2280 (thanks to Ross Morgan, sponsor).

Last year's winners Barry Wakely, Brian Godber, Lloyd Fitness and Ken Robson? (Taradale) will be defending their title.    The best team (on paper), Murray Glassey, Dean and Craig Drummond and Jim Bentley are also likely winners, but any of the following combinations may hit a ‘purple patch’ and so defeat the tournament favourites.

Mike Isaacson has taken a team of Heretaunga juniors (Paul Scott, Maika Hapuku and Peter Jones). Bruce Stewart has teamed up with Ian Mason, Bruce Ferrick and Mike Brown (composite), and Havelock North’s Grant Hall has taken his father's invitation and brought in Paul Viggers.   Sponsor Ross Morgan has Pat and Frank Golder plus Paul Harrison with him

Clifford Marshall always plays with Paul Sorensen and Jack Philip, Joe Johanson and Bill Smoothy are notable Napier invitees.  Waipawa will be represented by Gary Allerby who has teamed up with local hope Bill Hynd.

Usual participants in this event, Barry Wynks and Glen Curtis are overseas and Steve Love is being presented his 25 star by Bowls Manawatu, while David Jones from Taupo could not get a team together

The weather forecast is not good for the forthcoming weekend – but of course, this will have no effect at Bowls Heretaunga Indoor Stadium – so come along to see excellent bowls being
