Rowing at Cashmere High School began in the 2012/13 season after Physical Education and Health Teacher Mrs. Ruth Anderson introduced it as an extracurricular sport. Since then, the program has grown remarkably, with a dedicated squad of over 40 rowers and coxswains. We have an active parent group and a fantastic coaching team who work together to ensure the program continues to grow and operate effectively.
Our program is built on the spirit of achievement through participation, and we welcome all students. With an athlete-centered and coach-driven structure, we provide a positive environment where rowers can develop their skills, build lifelong friendships, and have fun.
The rowing season runs from the start of Term 4 until the end of Term 1, including some training at the beginning and end of the summer holidays, with a break over Christmas and New Year. Most of our weekly training sessions are hosted at the Canterbury Rowing Club on Kerrs Reach.
Recent Achievements
2026: Shattering Glass Ceilings
The Dawn Cup Dynasty Broken: In a moment that shattered a long-standing glass ceiling, the Girls U18 Four crew, consisting of Millie Brooks, Zoe Clarke, Charlotte Clatworthy, Eleri Clare, and Ivy O'Meagher, achieved a podium finish in the prestigious Dawn Cup final. Historically dominated by private and single-sex schools, no co-educational state secondary school had reached the podium in this event since online records began in 2003. Fittingly, the crew rowed to this historic result in the boat Whai Huarahi (meaning "Opportunities"), perfectly reflecting one of the school's core values.
The U18 Quad Three-Peat: The Girls U18 Quad crew of Millie Brooks, Zoe Clarke, Eleri Clare, Regan Kelly, and Ivy O'Meagher dominated the water to win the national title for the third consecutive year.
New Zealand Representation: Following her stellar performances, Eleri Clare was selected to represent New Zealand at the World Rowing U19 Championships.
2024: Top Overall Sculling School in New Zealand
At the 2024 Maadi Regatta, Cashmere High School proved its immense depth, finishing as the 4th overall rowing school in New Zealand and the number 1 co-ed school in the country and brought home the prestigious President's Scull trophy as the top overall sculling school at the regatta.
Trophy Haul: The squad captured 4 national titles GU15 Octiplue, GU16 Quad, GU17 Quad, GU18 Quad.
A Milestone First: The Girls U18 Quad crew of Poppy Wyndham, Abbie Higgins, Eleri Clare, Thea Murdie, and Hazel Bown claimed the school's first-ever Under-18 national title.
2022: The Maadi Cup Breakthrough
The foundation for this era of success was laid at the 2022 Maadi Regatta. The Boys U18 Eight crew, comprising Oscar Clatworthy, Sam Clelland, George Higgins, Will Anderson, Pablo Fitzgerald, Sam Evans, Jack MacDonald, Archie MacDonald, and Hazel Bown, made history by securing an unprecedented 4th place finish in the premier Maadi Cup final, signalling Cashmere's arrival as a heavyweight in New Zealand school rowing.
