Hockey Season Wrapup 2023

The local Hockey competition wrapped up over the past few weeks with all the Craighead teams having a great season. In the Year 7/8 grade, on a Friday night, we had 3 teams entered. Craighead Blue and White in the all girls grade and Craighead Green in amongst the boys. The Craighead Blue team made the final against Temuka and it was an exciting game with Temuka just taking the win in a closely fought battle. All 3 teams have shown huge improvement over the season and hopefully some of the girls will be part of the South Canterbury Development Program which will continue to develop their skills and give them a taste of 11 aside leading into next season.

In the Senior grades we had four teams for the first time.  The 1st XI played in the Dunedin competition for the first part of the season which allowed them to play against other secondary school teams. In the local competition they finished well beating Cambridge 4-1 in the playoff for 3rd and 4th. The 2nd XI also finished the local competition on a high, beating Temuka Women 3-0 to win the Senior Women’s 2nd division. Our two 3rd XI teams also improved as the season went on, it’s a tough ask for a lot of our Year 9/10 girls coming into 11 aside and having to play against women. The Blue team were awarded the Hockey South Canterbury Sportsmanship trophy for the season, a reflection of their can do attitude and perseverance.

A massive thanks to all the coaches, managers & umpires, without you these girls would be unable to play. Also to the committee for all the organising behind the scenes.
