Our 1st XV have topped off a great season coming away with a convincing win 82-27 in the final on Wednesday night vs Waitaki/St Kevin’s combined.

Our girls started out on the back foot letting in an early try to a very pumped up much bigger opponents who made it clear that their intent was to use their size through the middle. After a period of solid defence Craighead managed to turn the game with 5 quick unanswered tries, using our superior speed in the outside channels. Waitaki then managed to hold onto the ball for the remainder of the first half scoring two more tries before half time with Craighead going to the break ahead 35-15

Waitaki came out after the break charged up but some fantastic defence from our forwards lead by our tireless captain Grace Flett, eventually creating plenty of opportunities for Craighead to use their attacking powers running in another 6 tries to come away with a great win.

Isla Syme had an amazing day kicking 11 from 12 conversions

Try Scorer’s : Lydia Giles 4, Sienna Wright 4, Orla Motly 2, Molly Smith 1, Zoe Parker 1

The Team has one game to finish the season off against Columba in Dunedin next Wednesday.

Craighead vs Columba

After a successful triumph in the final of the South Canterbury U18 competition over St Kevin’s/ Waitaki GHS, the First XV continued to test themselves with a final fixture against Columba College in Dunedin on Tuesday.

In what was a very evenly matched encounter, both teams traded tries and the lead throughout the game in what was a battle of speed vs size. With scores locked at 24-21 at the end of the first half, we knew we were in for a tight tussle. In the end the silky skills and raw speed of the CDS backline, and some rock solid defence from our forward pack was the difference between the two sides who ran out eventual winners 34 – 28. Restricting the dangerous Columba backs to only 1 try in the second half is a testament to the strength of this CDS team. This is intended to be the first of an annual fixture between the two schools with Craighead hosting the 2024 fixture in Timaru.

Acknowledgement of the prowess of the First XV this season has also come in the form of a contingent of Craighead players selected in the Hanan Shields U18 team to contest the South Island Tournament. With teams playing some initial games prior to the tournament proper, the Hanan Shields team will play against Canterbury U18 on Saturday as the curtain raiser for the final of the Farah Palmer Cup.

Players selected for Hanan Shields U18:

  • Grace Flett
  • Lydia Giles
  • Orla Motley (also chosen as Vice Captain)
  • Zoe Parker
  • Sienna Wright
