Christchurch Metro Cricket are pleased to have accepted an application to join the Premier Women’s Competition from the Burnside West Cricket Club in partnership with North West Women.
North West is an amalgamation of the Burnside West University and Merivale Papanui Clubs, having played in junior and youth grades for the past three seasons. Two of the three teams in the Division One/Under 19 grade in 2019-20 were from North West Women and they dominated the grade for the second consecutive season with North West Sizzle winning and North West Steam finishing runner-up. Four other teams represented North West Women last season, making them the largest female section in Christchurch.
In applying to join the grade, the club’s women’s convenor Shane Young commented that “ A number of players have already achieved higher honors with one making the Magicians training squad and five players being selected for the Canterbury Under 19 squad”. Young also commented that “Our goal is to provide opportunities for women and girls to play cricket at all levels of the game from juniors through to Premier grade and on to representative honours, as well as opportunities in social grades.
In confirming the entry CMCA Chairman Bruce Findlay expressed full support for a team that has progressed through the North West Women’s development programme and were now ready to make the next step.
This will increase the number of teams in the Premier Women’s competition to five for the 2020-21 season.
