Canterbury vs Otago - Speights trophy

5th & 6th May

Canterbury held onto the Speights trophy for a 13th consecutive year defeating Otago 152-100 at the Lincoln Events Centre.Canterburys defence of the trophy started very well with the fours teams all bar one, coming away with points. Otago consolidated in the following Singles and Pairs rounds to claw back a bit of the advantage, holding Canterbury to a slender 4 point lead at the tea break. Some well chosen words to the team from Captain Ashley Diamond prior to begining the evenings play saw Canterbury spring into life, dominating the ensuing round to finish the night with a comfortable 101-67 lead. The beginning to Sunday morning was a horror story for an unusually complacent Canterbury. Otago pounced on the unsuspecting holders first up in the fours, with Mel Spicers team being theonly Canterbury team to take any points out of these games.Otago failed to capitalise on this dream start to the day as Canterburys leads and twos quickly took the advantage back in their Singles matches.  This paved the way for the skips and threes to end any slim hopes of an Otago fight back, taking points from all but 2 of the following matches. The final session of Pairs was a mere formality as Canterbury cruised to a comfortable and one would think, satisfying win for manager Paul Eden.
