CHAMPION OF CHAMPION FOURS
CIBA Hall, Sunday 25 September
Won by: GCLA
(Murray Fraser, Marie Philpott, Nikita Blair & Trinity Blair)

Congratulations to Murray Fraser on winning his Silver Star for 5 Champion of Champion Titles.

GCLA capped off a good weekend with a win today and runners-up yesterday.
Halswell had a strong win in the semi-final against Kaiapoi but had a horror start in the final against GCLA dropping a 4 on the 1st end then 1s on the 2nd & 4th ends to be 6-1 down after 4 ends. They fought back to be 6-5 down after 7 ends but missed a shot on the 8th end leaving the head open for Murray who drew a second shot. Another 1 to GCLA on the 9th end left Halswell in the same situation as GCLA faced in yesterday's final - needing 4 or more on the last end.

3 teams qualified from the field of 10.
Semi-final:
Halswell (Colin Gilbert, Jason Hipper, Lewis Hall, Jeanette Hipper) 11,
Kaiapoi (Terry Miller, TBA, Judy Harrison, Andrea Stevenson) 5;
Final:
GCLA 9, Halswell 6

Teams entered:
ARAWA, GCLA, HALSWELL, HORNBY, KAIAPOI, QUINNS RD, RICHMOND, SPREYDON, ST PAUL'S, WOOLSTON

CHAMPION OF CHAMPION TRIPLES

(Carol Spicer, Valerie Fretwell & Ray Dalkie)

Both Richmond & GCLA had strong semi-final wins. The final was closer. 4-6 down with 3 ends to go, Richmond picked up a 5 (Murray missed with a run shot & Carol drew another) to take the score to 9-6. Richmond picked up 1 on the next end leaving GCLA needing 4 or more on the last end.

4 teams qualified from the field of 12.

HARCOURTS GOLD REDWOOD SUPER SEVENS - FINAL RESULTS
Won by:
Hornby 1, consisting of:
Alan Clarke, Jullie Dalley, Bev Diamond, Pat Hartland, Jo Hill, Mike King, Dave Philpott, Alan Quirke, Jan Shirley & Vanessa Tyson

Hornby1 held onto 1st place following the final round of Super Sevens on Wednesday night at CIBA Hall.
Going into the final round with a 1pt lead over second placed Woolston and playing Woolston, whoever won the night was going to claim the title (though a draw would have been suffice for Hornby1). Hornby1 lost the Fours to Woolston but won the Singles and Pairs to increase their lead to 3pts. (A later recount showed Hornby1 went into this final round with a 4pt lead so Woolston needed all 3 games to beat them.)

4pts back, only 1pt separated 3rd & 4th place holders and with the teams not playing each other each could score 6pts moving them into contention for 2nd place.
As it was, Richmond/Woolston won enough to keep them ahead of St Paul's but not enough to catch Woolston. Woolston's one win against Hornby1 was enough to keep them ahead of the composite Richmond/Woolston's one and a half wins.

Final standings:
Hornby1 59, Woolston 53, Richmond/Woolston 51, St Paul's 49, Hornby2 39, Kaiapoi 38, Fernside 32, Templeton 32, GCLA 31, Papanui 28, Spreydon 23, Quinns Rd 18, Avonhead 15.

CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIP FOURS
Sunday 18 September at CIBA Hall
Won by:
Simon Thomas, Michael Lawson, Julie Thomas & Jeremy Markham (Rakaia)

The Thomas's & Lawson showed again today the strength & class of their team in this event. Having won the title in 2013, 2014 & semi-finalists last year (all with Mat Bassett playing lead or second), they returned this year with Jeremy Markham as lead and easily took the title. Even the depth of talent in Graham's team had no answers in the final. Eden did outdraw Markham most ends but the head would soon change leaving little chance for Graham's team to get in and get the shot. Can anybody take a win from this team? Last year showed that they can be beaten but it took a fellow NZ Rep to do so. This is Simon's 21st Canterbury Title, Julie's 15th, Michael's 3rd & Jeremy's 1st.

In other results, Spreydon's team of Tony Anderson, Maurice Coad, Dave Fuller & Merilyn Coad did well to make it to the Semi-finals. They defeated the father & son team from Stoke, Nelson, Mike & Kaleb Johnston playing with Kevin Anngow & Katie-Rae Botica 10-8 in the first round of post-section and won their next game 11-4 before losing to Graham's team 6-10 in the semi-final.

The other semi-final saw Dave Bullock again come up against Simon.
Different teams but runner-up to Simon in 2014, put out by Simon in Quarter-finals last year and put out by Simon in Semi-finals this year 8-13.
That sounds very cruel of Simon. Maybe Dave's turn next year.

12 qualifiers from the field of 30.
Byes:
D Bullock, A Martin, R Hamilton, Al Graham (Hornby)
C Matthews, MT Hooper, W Kamo, J Thompson (St Paul's)
K Hooper, J Walsh, K Guild, C Prattley (Quinns Rd)
Ann Graham, R Osborne, D Osborne, J Eden (Woolston)
1st Rd:
S Thomas, M Lawson, J Thomas, J Markham (Rakaia) 13, M Fraser, R Fraser, M Taylor, R Ashe (GCLA)  6
A Perkins, I Cope, P Clement, B Lawton (Celtic) 7, A Clarke, D Philpott, J Shirley, B Diamond (Hornby) 3
T Anderson, M Coad, D Fuller, M Coad (Spreydon) 10, M Johnston, K Anngow, K Johnston, KR Botica (Nelson) 8
S Cooper, M Spicer, R Carlson, C Spicer (Richmond) 14, L Ashby, E Ashby, J Muir, J Beckingsale (Kaiapoi) 1
Quarter-finals:
D Bullock 7, C Matthews 5
S Thomas 10, A Perkins 5
T Anderson 11, S Cooper 4
Ann Graham 6, K Hooper 3
Semi-finals:
Simon Thomas, Michael Lawson, Julie Thomas, Jeremy Markham 13, Dave Bullock, Audrey Martin, Richard Hamilton, Alistair Graham 8
Ann Graham, Rob Osborne, Deanne Osborne, Jenny Eden 10, Tony Anderson, Maurice Coad, Dave Fuller, Merilyn Coad 6
Final:
Thomas 11, Graham 5

CHAMPION OF CHAMPION PAIRS
Saturday 17 September
Won by: Kaiapoi
(Gary Ashby & Glenda Ellis)

3 teams qualified from a field of 10 on the day.
Chris Matthews & Dylan Campbell of St Paul's played Richmond's Robin Wolland & Brian Nelson in the semi-final.
St Paul's were 5-1 up half way through but a kill by Matthews 2 ends later brought the scores level and Richmond went on to win 8-6.
A similar pattern in the final. Richmond was up 4-2 with 3 ends to go but Kaiapoi got the last 3 ends scoring 2, 2 & 1 to win 7-4.

HENSELITE CHAMPION OF CHAMPION SINGLES
Saturday 10 September in North Wellington
Won by:
Geoff Coughey (Tauranga)

Coughey defeated our representative, Chris Matthews, 12-11 in the semi-finals and defeated Nigel Warnes of Golden Bay-Motueka 15-6 in the final.
In the other semi-final, Warnes defeated Counties' Matthew Ellis 11-10.

14 players qualified from the field of 34.
Matthews had a strong qualifying round scoring 3 and a half wins out of 4.
Only two other players went through undefeated: Counties' Matthew Ellis & Waikato's Teri Anderson.
In post-section, Matthews defeated Doc Tipene of Poverty Bay-East Coast 11-8 and then Otago's Daniel French 11-2 before narrowly losing to Coughey.

WELCH TROPHY 2 - 4 SEPTEMBER
Christchurch

North Taranaki retained the Welch Trophy on Sunday finishing just two pts ahead of 2nd place getters, Ashburton and four pts ahead of 3rd place getters, Counties. NT got off to a good start on Friday scoring 29 out of a possible 36. CS trailed on 19 and AS 17. NT retained that margin through to the 3rd session when a strong round by both CS & AS saw them close the gap to just 3pts. The fourth session saw AS close the gap to just 1.5pts. The final session was a near repeat of last year's except this time it was Ashburton not Canterbury battling it out with N. Taranaki and this year N. Taranaki went into the fifth session with a slender lead but it still came down to the final round of Pairs. Just 3.5pts ahead, NT lost all bar one of their games but that one win was enough to keep them ahead of Ashburton's win and a draw and Counties' two wins. None of those top three teams played each other in that last round of Pairs so any of the three could have taken the title. It was a close exciting finish and congratulations to North Taranaki on their win and 5th Welch Trophy.

Final standings:
North Taranaki - 105.5
Ashburton - 103.5
Counties - 101.5
Upper Hutt Valley - 85.5

NZ JUNIOR SINGLES
Sat 27 August, North Wellington
Won by:
Jonty Horwell (Otago)

24 players from around the country lined up to compete for the 2016 Junior Singles Title at the North Wellington Indoor Bowls Hall today having won their district championships.
Our representative, Katie-Rae Botica, got off to a good start beating South Canterbury's Cameron Ellis & Ashburton's Taylor Mackenzie then had a loss to South Otago's Daniel Cook. A win against Nelson's Kaleb Johnston in the final round (some will remember Kaleb from his semi-final placing in our Canterbury Singles just 4 weeks ago) saw Katie-Rae qualify for Post Section play.
11 of the 24 qualified.
Katie-Rae lost to Povety Bay's Leighton Shanks in the first round and previous winner (2014), Otago's Jonty Horwell, beat last year's winner, North Taranaki's Aidan Zittersteijn, 10-9 in a close final.

Full results including the HGC McLachlan Trophy match & tomorrow's Secondary Schools Competition can be viewed on the

CANTERBURY CHAMPION OF CHAMPION SINGLES
9am Saturday 20th August at CIBA Hall
Won by: Richmond
(Robin Wolland)

In a repeat of last year's final, Richmond again played Hornby. Last year, Hornby's David Philpott took the title earning Dave his Silver Star. This year saw Robin play Hornby's Jo Hill and after getting away to a comfortable 8-1 lead after 4 ends, Robin was happy to concede 1s. But with the score 11-8 on the final end, Robin realised he was 3 shots down on the head and missed with a run shot. Two extra ends had to be played to find the winner. Crucially for Robin he had last bowl each end. He didn't play his last bowl first end thinking he held shot but a measure declared the end drawn. The second end saw Robin score 2 earning him his Silver Star. It was an exciting end to a final that at one stage looked to be all over.

The two semi-final games were also close and crucially for Jo & Robin they both had last bowl for although they were up on the card they were down shots on the head.

In all, 6 players qualified from a field on the day of 15.
Rd1:
Deanne Osborne (Woolston) 14, Jason Hipper (Halswell) 7
Robin Wolland (Richmond) 13, Kevin Anngow (St Paul's) 9
Semi-final:
Jo Hill (Hornby) 10, Rick Fraser (GCLA) 8
Wolland 10, Osborne 9
Final:
Wolland 13, Hill 11

CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES
Proudly Sponsored by:
John Rhind Funeral Directors
9am Sunday 31 July at CIBA Hall
Won by:
Mike King (Hornby)

King won both the semi-final & final with his last bowl. One down in the semi-final against Chris Matthews (St Paul's), King drew the jack back a few inches to sit for two. The final against Mike Johnston (Stoke, Nelson) was decided on an extra end. Seven each after 10 ends, they both got ones to make it eight each after 12 ends. Then down on the extra end, King moved the jack out with his third bowl. Johnston drew to the jack but to the side and King with his last bowl drew the jack off to take the win and claim his tenth Canterbury Title.
The other semi-final saw Johnston stop his son, Kaleb, in his tracks. President Dave commented in the prize giving that maybe Kaleb wanted a ride home and it was gracious of him to let his father win. Kaleb said his mum didn't think so.

In all, 25 players qualified from the field of 55 including our four outside players.

VETERAN TRIPLES
Proudly sponsored by:
Essie Summers Retirement Village
CIBA Hall, Thursday 14 July, 9:30am
Won by:
Maurice Berkeley, Kathleen Curtis & John Grey (Woolston)

Morning Tea Supplied
Players Bring Own Lunch

22 Teams Entered
Martin Hansford, Donna Kara, Brian Ward, Maurice Berkeley, Robert Mather, Brad Henry,
Martin Jefferson, Alistair Graham, Ken Richardson, Andy Wilson, Bob Bennett, John Blackburn, Sheryl Tyerman, Maurice Coad, John Hall, Brenda Sunbeam, Audrey Martin, Robin Smith, Robin Wolland, David Anngow, Julius Thompson, Sue Williams.

With the recent passing of Bill Trembath, defending title holders, Ted Maclaren & Elaine Folau played under a new skip but were eliminated in section play with only 7 of the 22 teams qualifying. Last year's runners-up, Berkeley, Curtis & Grey comfortably won their two post section games to make the final and were too strong winning the final 12-3. Bennett's team was lucky to make the final. 9-3 down to Sunbeam after 7 ends, Sunbeam's team relaxed too soon and failed to get anything near the kitty in the last two ends. Bennett, with last bowl on the 8th end, picked up a 3 and on the 9th end, was holding shots when the skips came up to play. Bob drew close. Brenda, with her first bowl, played into the head but was wide. Bob drew another close. Brenda now 4 possibly 5 down had another go at the head but again just missed. That's bowls and shows that a game is never over till the last end's been played.

7 teams qualified.
Bye: B Sunbeam, L Hardwick, G Dobbs (St Peter's)
Rd 1:
B Bennett, S McKey, R Bennett (Papanui) 9, Sue Williams, B Nelson, M Tullett (Tui) 7

CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIP PAIRS
Proudly Sponsored by
O'Sheas Public House
Won by:
Alan Clarke & Gary Ashby (Kaiapoi)

Hornby's Alan Clarke with Kaiapoi's Gary Ashby won the first full tournament in the newly refurbished CIBA Hall, Kearneys Rd, Sunday July 10, beating Hornby's Mike King & Julie Dalley 11-8 in an interesting final that saw Clarke pick up 3's on the 3rd & 4th end to be 8-1 up after 4 ends thanks to some excellent lead bowls by Ashby sewn up nicely by Clarke. Not deterred, King won the next three ends (including a restarted 7th end - a reminder to players to make sure all bowls are back behind the line) to bring the score back to 6-8 after 7 ends. It was a mat that suited draw bowls and this was shown again in the 9th end when Dalley with her last lead bowl, two shots down, tried to open the head up but killed the end. An extra end was played but Clarke & Ashby were playing too well to lose 5pts up.

In the semi-finals, Clarke beat Bruce Wolland & Kathleen Curtis (Woolston) 10-7 and King beat Neill Inglis & Jan Shirley (also Woolston) 10-1.

In all, 22 teams qualified from a field of 55 including two junior players from yesterday, Katie-Rae Botica & Lucas Tahu who both made it through to the quarter-finals. Katie-Rae, leading for father Pat (GCLA), lost to King 5-4 and Luke, leading for Robin Wolland (Richmond), lost to Robin's brother Bruce also 5-4.

CONGRATULATIONS TO
Canterbury's David Philpott, Mike King, Bev Diamond & Vanessa Tyson (Hornby Club);
WINNERS OF NZ MIXED 4S ZONE FINAL
Good Luck for the National Final on
23rd July.

It ended up a close call. We beat Ashburton first up then both teams won their second games. We lost our third game 10-9 to South Canterbury and Asburton won theirs giving both teams two wins each but our 3 end lead going into the last game was enough to keep Ashburton at bay.
---
Mixed Pairs Zone Final
won by Ashburton's Simon & Julie Thomas (Rakaia) with 3 wins.
All other teams had one win each with our team of Ann Graham & Colin Gilbert (Templeton RSA) finishing second on a countback of ends.
We won our first game but lost our second 6-5 to North Otago meaning we needed to beat the Thomas's and win at least 7 of the 10 ends. We were 1 up going into the last end but a loss on the 7th end meant that we had already lost 4 ends.
Good luck to Ashburton for the National Final on the 24th of July.

Pairs, Fours, Triples
Balclutha
Queen's Birthday Weekend Sat 4 - Mon 6 June

Michael Lawson (s), Ken Mackenzie & Stephen Preddy (Rakaia AS) won the Balclutha Subway 2016 SI Triples Monday evening beating Bob Crawford (s), Marilyn Holmes & Alan Gillespie (Momona, Otago) 11-6 in a final that saw Lawson get away to an early lead (4-0 after two ends) but to be 4-5 down after 5 ends. Lawson won the next four ends though to go into the final end with an unbeatable 6pt lead. Needing 6pts to force an extra end, Crawford's chances were dashed when one of their bowls went off the mat.

In the semi-finals, Lawson beat Grant Fortune (s), Brent Keen, Trevor Burgess (Invercargill WMC, Southland) 7-6 and Crawford beat David Horrell (s), Kathryn Edgar, Greame Miller (Tapanui, South Otago) 11-4.

With this win in the Triples, runner-up in the Pairs & last 8 in the Fours,  Ken Mackenzie was named Player of the Tournament.

Canterbury claims another title at the SI Champs Sunday night with a Hornby team of Mike King (s), Dave Philpott, Marilyn Paterson & Vanessa Tyson winning the 2016 SI Fours beating Derek Cooper (s), Matt Begg, Carolyn Cooper & Darryn Turner (Timaru Town & Country Club) 13-3 in a final that saw Cooper concede defeat after 7 ends. Marilyn Paterson subsituted for an injured Bev Diamond who has been forced to watch the tournament from the sidelines. King's last bowl on the first end set the tone for the game. Two shots down, he played onto one of the shot bowls and moved the jack sideways to sit amongts four of their bowls.

In the semi-finals, King beat Daniel Sinclair (s), Barry Cadogan, Mike Harte & Brent Sinclair (Green Island, Otago) 10-8 and Cooper beat Suzanne Mackie (s), Brian Hotton, Jason Gray & Ann Mackie 8-7 on an extra end.
----------------
Maurice Berkeley & Jenny Eden (Woolston CY) won the Johnstone Electrical 2016 SI Pairs Saturday night beating Ken & Rowena Mackenzie (Rakaia AS) in an exciting final which saw Berkeley & Eden come from 6-0 down after 4 ends to 9-6 up playing the final end. Holding two shots and a close third, McKenzie needed to knock Berkeley's bowl off the head to sit for 3, possibly 4 but it didn't move far enough and they got 2 to make the final score 9-8.

In the semi-finals, Mike King & Vanessa Tyson (Hornby CY) lost to Berkeley 10-12 on an extra end and Suzanne Mackie & Brian Hotton (N Inv SL) lost to Mackenzie 7-11.

CY CHAMPIONSHIP TRIPLES
Won by:
Mike King (skip), Jullie Dalley & Vanessa Tyson (Hornby)

Played at Southbrook School Sun 29 May.
10 teams qualified from a field of 30.
Note: CT = Composite Team
Round 1:
A Martin, B Clemett, K-R Botica (Avonhead-CT) 9 R Wolland, V Osborne, L Tahu ( Richmond) 3;
L Blank, R Blank, J Small (Sefton) 6 M Fraser, M Berkeley, R Fraser (GCLA-CT) 4
Quarter-finals:
R Macauley, E Archer, R Ashe (Fernside) 10 Martin 4;
D Philpott, Ann Graham, B Diamond (Hornby-CT) 6 G Hill, J Hill, P Hartland (Hornby) 5;
C Matthews, K Curtis, J Grey (St Paul's) 9 Blank 4;
M King, J Dalley, V Tyson (Honby) 7 J Thompson, J Hamilton, R Hamilton (Hornby) 5
Semi-finals:
Matthews 10 Philpott 3;
King 10 Macauley 5
FINAL:
King 9 Matthews 5

With 4 teams qualifying & all drawing the bye, Hornby's chances of having a team in the final looked good, but in the Q-finals all 4 Hornby teams drew each other and by half way through the S-finals both remaining Hornby teams trailed. Philpott picked up a 1 first end but dropped the next 5 ends to trail 7-1 to Matthews after 6 ends. Matthews was playing too well. Any time Philpott's team held shot or position, Matthews would draw or move the jack.
In the other S-final, King trailed 3-2 to Macauley after 5 ends. Macauley's team were playing lovely draw bowls to lead 3-0 after 3 ends and to drop 1s in the next two ends. But on the 6th end, Macauley missed a crucial cover shot and it looked like King would pick up a 2 with his shot but with all the back bowls the shot moved the jack to sit for 5. A two on the next end and Macauley went from 3-2 up after 5 to 9-3 down after 7.
The final looked to be going Matthews' way. Both teams played beautiful draw bowls. King picked up a 3 on the 3rd end but the other first four ends went to Matthews to make the score 5-3 to Matthews after 5. In the second half the tables were turned. King picked up 1 on each of the next 3 ends to lead 6-5 after 8. Matthews faced a horrible sight with his last bowl on the 9th end. No position and several shots down he needed to move the jack back up the mat or get through and sit for shot. The jack did move but went out & off rather than up. 9-5 to King, last end. Tyson drew close, Grey drew touches, Dalley drew a toucher, Curtis drew close. King covered. Matthews drew to knock Dalley's bowl out but was long. His second bowl drew the bowl he was after but Dalley's stayed put. Final score 9-5.

Final:
Philpott 9 Wolland 8

The win gives Philpott his 20th Canterbury title.
In accepting the trophy, Dave commented that several of their games today came down to the last bowl and the final was no exception. After winning the first end, they had a battle to stay in the game. 2pts on the 5 end brought them back to 4-5 at the half way stage. The turning point came on the 7th end. 4-7 down on the card and down on the head, Dave, with his last bowl, moved the jack over to their bowls to win 2pts. 1pt each on the next two ends took the score to 7-8 to Wolland's team going into the final end. Philpott's team had had to fight hard to stay in the game and on this final end Dave drew them two shots to hold the win. Wolland's team played exceptional bowls throughout the game and it took some equally impressive shots from Philpott's team to keep them close and take the win.

The winning team will represent Canterbury in the NZ Mixed Fours Zone Final in Ashburton on Saturday the 2nd of July.
Good Luck to Dave, Mike, Bev & Vanessa.

Canterbury wins both the McLeod and Speights Trophies!

In their annual clashes against West Coast and Otago, both Canterbury teams led from the outset and held on to their leads to win both trophies.

Final Results:

CANTERBURY v WEST COAST
Saturday 30 April in Westport

Canterbury 47, West Coast 33

CANTERBURY v OTAGO
Saturday 30 April & Sunday 1 May in Christchurch

Canterbury 140, Otago 112

After an absence last year, West Coast was back under a new format. A team of 16 played Fours and Pairs then split into four teams of Triples and Singles. Still played over two rounds. Canterbury led comfortably after the first round 28-12. West Coast had a better second round beating us 21-19 but not enough to catch us.

Otago also trailed from the outset but after the first day's play were only 6pts behind Canterbury with the score 87-81. With Otago hot on their heels, Canterbury dug deep and extended their lead throughout the final round on Sunday.

Congratulations to both teams.
Full results to be posted soon.

Semi Final
Ann Graham, Colin Gilbert 14 Vicky Osborne Ray Dalkie 1;
Murray Fraser, Katie-Rae Botica 9 David Philpott, Bev Diamond 1
Final
Graham 5, Fraser 4

In one of the tightest finals we've seen in a while the score was 1-1 after 5 ends, a contrast to their convincing wins in both the quarters & semis. Graham broke away in the 6th end scoring 3 shots but Fraser picked up a 1 and 2 on the next two ends to take the score to 4-4 for the 9th & final end. The winning shot was Graham's second bowl. Fraser held 3 shots with one bowl to come but the jack was out in the open for a draw. Graham drew one close and blocked the draw forcing Fraser to try a slight run at the head to tap the jack over to their 3 but his bowl just missed leaving Graham not needing to play her last bowl.

The winning team will represent Canterbury in the NZ Mixed Pairs Zone Final in Ashburton on Saturday the 2nd of July.
Good Luck to Ann & Colin.
