President’s Autumn Message to Club Members and the Community

By now everyone will have experienced our fantastic new courts and lights. This was a huge project, expertly run by Pete Manderson. I don’t think that anyone can imagine the extent of the job and detail of work required. The project took up a huge amount of Pete’s time and as a Club, we thank and acknowledge this to him.

On the money side, Megan Laing was also exceptional and fundraised ~$130k from different sources, without which we wouldn’t have been able to complete the job.

Greg Harnett, as Treasurer, also put in an immense amount of time and has done a great job managing our club funds. Tiger Turf were the primary Contractors of the project and have on the whole, done a great job. We said to them that we have a big Club Membership and were looking for a long term association with them, and they delivered.

Bridgeman’s Concrete also gave us a very good deal, which allowed our $’s to go further. The cement used in the job is their new ECO-CEM, which is the only green star rated cement in NZ. Apparently the process to make this cement reduces the amount of CO2 being released, and for our courts was a reduction of 5 tonnes of CO2. They would obviously value any support Club Members could give them.

Not only have we new courts (with proper subsurface drainage), new nets, new poles and state of the art efficient LED lights but also a new roof on the Club Rooms, new furniture and a container for Matt, the Coach to store all of the Coaching gear.

We still haven’t finished, as the volley court will be tidied up and we are also going to concrete around the front of the Club Rooms to tidy all of that area up. Lastly we will paint the Club Rooms.  The lights are also being fine-tuned and we should end up with even better lighting than we currently have. After all of this is done we will still have a healthy, (reduced!!!) bank balance. With the project nearly completed, Committee have been discussing where to from here.

We agree that now we have probably the best facilities in the country (maybe on the planet!!!), our emphasis will be on tennis and concentrating on building and improving the Club. Matt the Coach is doing a great job, and we want to build on where he currently is. Ideas include more interaction with other Clubs and the experiment where we had a couple of weeks of Business House around the private courts, was received very well. So we may see this happening again.

This year is also the 125th Anniversary of the Clevedon Tennis Club. Currently we are looking at a “Tennis Day” on Saturday the 28thOctober. This will involve past and present Members, including tennis and afternoon tea. Later that day, it is envisaged that we will have dinner or similar, depending upon numbers keen. Watch this space on our website - it would be great to get an indication of participation.

We are not running a Tennis Tournament this year, it is thought that every second year is probably better and this means that we won’t burn out the girls who do such a great job organising it!  That is about all for now, enjoy the new facilities.

Cheers
Callum
