SPORTS

INHALE and EXHALE completely!!

WOW, what a couple of weeks it has been here at St John’s!!

As you will all know the girls recently competed in the Aerobics competition, School Cross Country and School Swimming Sports all in one week.

Last week, a group of our Year 5/6 girls completed in the Rippa Rugby Carnival at Rugby Park and the All Saints Cross Country.

Perhaps the busier we are the more productive we are!

ALL SAINTS CROSS COUNTRY

This event is for boys and girls aged 10 & 11 and is held annually at Elizabeth Park.  This was held on Thursday 2nd June. The following girls ran the 2000m course and their results were as follows:

Age 10: 1st Drew Peddie, 2nd  Martina Bosma, 3rd Gwynedd Ryder,  4th Tayla Nel

Age 11: 3rd Amelia Frew, 4th Jessica Hay, 5th Sophie Purdon, Ingrid Fleming.

Not only are we proud of these achievements, but more importantly the support that the girls gave each other throughout this event was brilliant. Well done girls, outstanding effort!

SOUTHLAND CROSS COUNTRY

The Southland Primary School Cross Country will be held at Waimumu on Friday 17th June (postponement Tuesday 21st June). Further information will be emailed to the parents and students who have qualified to compete.

NETBALL

Netball is well underway. Thank you again to the parents who have volunteered to coach/manage our teams.

It was a bit of a rocky start with grading games. However, we hope the creases have been ironed out and it is smooth sailing from here on in.

Have a great season girls!

ORIENTEERING
RIPPA RUGBY CARNIVAL

The Rippa Rugby Carnival took place on Wednesday afternoon, the 1st of June at Rugby Park.  Southland Rugby put a huge amount of effort into hosting this event and they did a fabulous job.

I’d like to thank Scott Patterson and Tracey Hamilton for taking the time out of their day to coach/manage our St John’s Spinners.

I’d also like to thank Kelly Jennings for helping out with transport.

Again, we couldn’t offer these additional sporting events without your help.

The girls won their first game and had two more close games.

A comment below from Rugby Southland regarding our girls.

“It was remarked on by both our Community Team members as well as some of the other schools, on the skill and talent that your girls showed in their games.

Awesome work girls – we look forward to seeing you in the upcoming Tag Touch season.

SWIMMING SPORTS

The senior school attended Splash Palace to either compete or support our swimmers.

It was a fantastic morning at the pool, and it was great to see the comradery across the houses!

The overall results are as follows:

Junior championship: 1st Sophia Warbrick Smith, 2nd Eilidh Gordon, 3rd Ave Valoa-Jack

Senior championship: 1st = Shanna-Beth Smith and Nieve Peddie,  2nd Olive Rutledge,  3rd Olivia Sorensen

House points: 1st Enderby, 2nd Alabaster, 3rd Marchant, 4th Lester

Well done to all of you who competed, there were some very close races!!

Thank you to Calli Peddie and Kelly O’Connor for assisting with stopwatch duty and walking back and forth from one end of the pool to the other.

We had a team of superstars in our parent vs year 8 girls relay. Calli Peddie, Jen Gordon, Vicki Unahi and Glen O’Connor who certainly gave the girls a run for their money, such an exciting race!  Glen I think you took one breath in 25m!!!

TAG TOUCH

Tag Touch registrations for Year 5/6 and Year 7/8 will be open for another week.

At this stage, we don't have enough players to create a team for either grade.

REPRESENTATIVE NEWS

Recently Emily achieved gold at the Step 1 gymnastics competition and is off to compete at the South Island Championships in Timaru.

Well done Emily, wishing you all the best.

PHOTOS

If anyone has taken any photos of our after school sports teams in action, please feel free to email them through to me as it would be nice to put some in the sports section of the newsletter when space is available.  sports@stjohnsgirls.scxhool.nz.

REPRESENTATIVE NEWS

If your daughter has made a representative team or has excelled in her sport, please remember to inform either myself or Mrs Roberts in the school office so we can acknowledge it in the newsletter. If they participated in a St John’s Girls’ School sports team we will note this for end of year achievement certificates and for Y7/8 stripes. Thank you.  My email is sports@stjohnsgirls.school.nz

QUOTE FOR THE DAY

Courage doesn’t always roar.

Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, “I will try again tomorrow”
