NELSON COLLEGE RUGBY NEWS

14th June 2022

What a fortnight or so we have had of late. And when will the rain stop and let us play some Rugby. It was certainly disappointing for our boys not to be able to play over the weekend but to their credit, they accepted it and many turned up to support the 1st XV at home on Saturday. It was great to see so many boys cheering on the team, helping with ball boy duties, updating the scoreboard and some even made a profit selling those annoyingly loud horns! Hopefully this week teams can get back to training and playing without rain, which is what they want to do.

All Blacks Naming

Congratulations to Nelson College Old Boys' David Havili and Leicester Fainga'anuku who were named in the All Blacks squad for the June Test Series against Ireland. This is Leicesters first time being named so is a huge achievement and well deserved. David has been in the side since 2017 and is in great form this season. Congratulations to both David & Leicesters, and all the best this weekend in the Super Rugby Final against the Blues!

Shirley Boys' Exchange

This exchange is happening next Tuesday 21st at Nelson College with Shirley bringing up their basketball team, football team, hockey team and two Rugby teams. It is going to be another great addition to this annual event, just hopefully it doesn't snow on us like it did in Christchurch last year!

Rugby Games Scheduled:

  • 1st XV play 11.00am on the Front Field (TBC)
  • U15A play 10.00am on Broads 2

1st XV Report

The 1st XV played Waimea Combined Schools 1st XV at home on Saturday. After two weeks of persistent rain, the field was very wet and meant the game was destined to be played and won through the forwards. The Nelson College forwards worked hard all game and proved the difference with the team winning convincingly 55-0. The team scored 9 tries in total to Blake Craddock 2, Matt Lowe 2, Paddy Beggs, Fletcher Hewitt-Smart, Devante Meredith, Colby Monk & Tylah Blake. Fletcher Hewitt-Smart converted 5 tries. The team is preparing for a huge game against the unbeaten Christchurch Boys' High School team this Saturday 11.00am at Nelson College.

Nelson College Front Field Upgrade – Adopt A Square

The Nelson College Old Boys Association has committed to upgrading the college’s front field, with the main aim to fix the drainage. The front field is the showpiece and defining feature of the College grounds, and the NCOBA want a field that they can be proud of and that is easily maintained. The NCOBA is seeking to raise the necessary funds, alongside the grants they hope to receive from charitable foundations. This is your chance to invest in the future of your college. NCOBA are giving you the opportunity to “Adopt a Square” on the Front Field. A typical rugby field has around 8,750 square metres, which, at $20 per Square, will reach their goal of $175,000. NCOBA are taking full responsibility for this upgrade, at no cost to the college. Go to Old Boys' Association | Nelson College for more information on how you can Adopt A Square.

NELSON COLLEGE CLUB REPORT

All Junior Rugby from under 6 to under 17 was called off over the weekend across Tasman due to the councils closing their grounds which were sodden. Our 1st XV played on however and proved it was a good decision to close the grounds as the front field quickly turned to mud. Check out the difference in the photo below of before and after the game!

The Senior Rugby class have been learning how to referee recently under the guidance of the Tasman Rugby Unions Referee Education Officer Dave Paterson. With so much water on the fields, the boys were left with the tennis courts as our field of play, practicing refereeing classmates in a game of Rippa Rugby. This week the boys were supposed to be going to Greenmeadows to Referee the Port Nelson Rippa Rugby Tournament. Unfortunately this event has been postponed to hopefully a dry day soon!
