NELSON COLLEGE RUGBY NEWS
4th July 2022
What a week! For the fourth year in a row, the 1st XV took out the Quadrangular title! This is the first time Nelson College has won four years in a row so is a huge achievement for the team and one we can all be very proud of. The team has played a lot of rugby leading into this tournament, much of it on soft, muddy ground, so they boys relished what looked like a pristine field to play running rugby on. Congratulations to the whole team including the coaching and management staff (both at home and in Whanganui) of Jono Phillips, Mike Fraser, Marty O'Cain, Grant Billcliff, Max Fraine, Chris Wahnig, Matt Doonan, Peter Grigg, Tony Anderson, Will Moloney & Alethea Stove. Well done.
1st XV Report
The 1st XV played Wellington College 1st XV on Monday in their Quad Semi Final and had to work right until the end to secure the win, fortuitously down to a missed penalty opportunity for Wellington on full-time. The kick was heading right down the centre until a gust of wind sent it wayward and we grabbed a 34-31 win to advance to the final. Read the Match Report here.
The final was played on Wednesday against Christ's College 1st XV in a match that doubled as a Miles Toyota Championship game. With a number of our boys' playing in their final Quad game, the expectation was high and they certainly did not disappoint. The team ran in 8 tries, converting 4 and never gave Christ's a chance. Tries were scoored by Callum Robertson 2, Jordan Smith, Tayne Hemopo 2, Nelesoni Malaulau, Sione Mafi & Zyon Ford tries, with Zyon Ford converting 4. Congratulations to the team on a great win. Full Match Report here.
The team now prepares for a game against Rangiora High School in Rangiora on Saturday 9th July. All the best boys.
All Blacks vs. Ireland Test Debutant - Leicester Fainga'anuku
Leicester became Nelson College's 23rd All Black and the 1200th person to wear the All Black jersey on Saturday evening playing against Ireland at Eden Park. This is a great achievement for him and we are all very proud of him for achieving this. It was awesome to see him come up against another old boy in James Lowe, who played in the same No.11 jersey. Congratulations to Leicester and James. Read more about the game here.
Kind Regards
