Webinar: TEC Report - Transitions from secondary school: Supporting school leavers to create a fulfilling life
The Tertiary Education Commission’s vision is for “A resilient, prosperous Aotearoa – where every person has the skills, knowledge and confidence to create a fulfilling life”. A crucial point on that journey is leaving school, where students make a first major decision towards fulfilling their life, and the pathways they take explode with variety. The decisions school leavers make impact their outcomes throughout life, and having the right support can help them make the highest quality decisions.
To understand school leavers and their experience of this decision, the TEC’s Insights team conducted deep dive research into what a fulfilling life is for school leavers, and the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to make their school-leaving decision.
The team are excited to share findings from this project with you, at an online webinar: 12-1pm on Thursday 4th August.
The session is for those working to support school leavers. It will be packed with key findings from the research, including the top careers students are aspiring to; what skills, knowledge and confidence they need when leaving school; what barriers make the transition most difficult; and what helps them the most.
The team analysed data on all 60,000 students that leave school each year to chart the pathways they take next, surveyed over 500 school leavers, and held in-depth interviews with 56 school leavers across the country to understand the ‘why’ behind these pathways.
Careers Information Grant Update
Just a heads up to let you know the funding models of schools have changed from decile ratings to Equity index. This means the Careers Information Grant will be calculated using the Equity Index as this is part of the Operational Funding and has previously been determined by the decile of the school. More information can be found here.
The key points to consider are:
From 2023 the current decile-weighted part of the CIG will be allocated using the Equity Index as an interim measure while the broader careers education work programme is developed.
This does no affect the Career Advisor allowance as the Guidance Staffing Entitlement is part of the Staffing Entitlement, which is not directly impacted by the Equity Index funding.
How can schools work out their CIG funding allocation for 2023?
Funding information is being aligned with the usual process for resourcing.
Schools have been sent their Equity Index number.
Funding information will be included as part of the provisional roll and funding process in September.

Skills Mapping - Mindful Fashion
Mindful Fashion is delighted to announce the launch of our Skills Mapping project.
A full-circle, thriving industry needs a skilled workforce. In 2021 Mindful Fashion convened a Workforce Development Working Group made up of representatives from the tertiary education sector and from the industry. This group set out with the objective to build a comprehensive picture of the skills landscape across the industry so that findings could be used by the industry, and incorporated into workforce and education planning.
We’ve surveyed the industry skills landscape and wrote a summary of our findings. We created a role map showing the broad range of roles in the industry, developed a skills framework for many of these roles, and have started to create a library of role profiles to spotlight individual roles and bring these roles to life. This project has resulted in the following industry-validated outcomes:
Hanga Aro Rau are using our findings to create a plan for the apparel sector to address critical skills shortages, and we have shared with Toi Mai, as well as numerous secondary and tertiary connections and the Industry.
WorldSkills NZ Electrical Interschool Events

Discover the success that can be found in Tourism!
Go with Tourism have released their most recent career pathway video, featuring Phil McGowan, General Manager of the All Blacks Experience.
As a commerce graduate with skills in business and marketing, Phil could have gone into any industry but chose Tourism and has since built a fantastic career. As he says himself: "You can be a financial controller or HR Manager in any industry... why not do it in Tourism?"
From hotels to classic Kiwi attractions - New Zealand Maritime Museum, SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton's Aquarium and Auckland Zoo - Phil has covered a range of roles from marketing, sales and management. However, it is the guest experience that Phil has found a passion for over the years; and since joining All Blacks Experience, has found he really enjoyed designing a new product for visitors. Looking towards his future, Phil hopes to continue working on a combination of these two joys.
