NELSON COLLEGE RUGBY NEWS

8th August 2022

The season is drawing quickly to it's conclusion with our 1st XV playing their semi final this weekend, along with our U14 & U17 teams playing semi finals this weekend. We are certainly looking forward to seeing how our teams all go this weekend and wish them all the best.

As a club, we can be very proud of the way our teams have conducted themselves this year and how they have lived our values. Two of our values are responsibility and teamwork and the U14 Kahurangi team lived these on Saturday. After their game was unfortunately cancelled, they decided to run a fun training at school, before heading down to Broads to support the U14 Quinn's team take on Takaka. The Quinn's had not won a game all season and finally did this weekend. Great stuff. Our Kahurangi team and coaches then decided to pack away the field for the Quinn's (in the mud!) and also tidy the gear shed. Awesome. It is so great to see a team doing this when they could have easily stayed home. Thank you to Jacob & Stacey Davis, Brennan Geddes, Kyle Bruning and the whole Kahurangi team. This is the Nelson College Rugby Way in action.

1st XV Report

The 1st XV played Roncalli Aoraki Combined 1st XV at home on Saturday in their final round-robin game for the season. The conditions were wet under foot but the rain held off. Roncalli played well in the first half and held our team to a 26-0 lead at halftime. However, sustained pressure and the impact of the bench wore the opposition down and resulted in a 67-0 win. The team scored 11 tries to Callum Robertson, Nelesoni Malaulau 2, Sione Mafi 2, Paddy Beggs, Colby Monk, Saumaki Saumaki 2, Timoci Sauira & Lucas Walker. Conversions went to Matt Lowe 3, Fletcher Hewitt-Smart, Zyon Ford & Harrison Inch.

The team now prepares for the Miles Toyota Championship semi final at home this Saturday 13th August against Christchurch Boys' High School. All the best boys.

Kind Regards

NELSON COLLEGE CLUB REPORT

The weather may have held off on Saturday, but the fields were still soaked and from the photos sent to me, the teams played in very muddy conditions. A huge congratulations to the U14 Quinns team who finally managed to win a game which they were super proud of. They have persevered all season and have certainly had their fair share of bad luck, so to get a win over Takaka is great. Well done.

This coming weekend sees our U14 & U17 teams playing in their respective semi finals. All the best to these teams. All teams will play up to the 20th August with all finals on that day and playoff games also.

NPD Player of the Day

Congratulations to these boys who received player of the day for their respective teams. Well done!

  • U17 Cambridge - Bailey Anderson (Forward of the Day) & Charlie McGillicuddy (Back of the Day)
  • U14 Argentina - Jayden Coetzee (Also Noah Wiechen from last weeks game)

Nelson College Pathway Programme 2022

The 2nd XV & U14A teams travelled to Culverden on Wednesday to play Darfield High School. The trip down was long, with the bus departing at 7.00am but we arrived on time at 11.30am and the boys started preparing themselves to play. The conditions were amazing with blue skies and very warm conditions which has been unusual for our team this season! The 2nd XV played very well and over powered Darfield throughout the game resulting in some excellent tries. A big thank you to coaches Terry Beggs and Grant Billcliff for taking this team. The U14A team with only a couple of practices under their belts, played superbly. They took on an U15 team from Darfield High School and put together some strong passages of play, eventuating in some excellent tries. The team on the game 60-17 which is positive leading into this weeks game against what will be stronger opposition. All the best to Yury Okamoto who has returned to Japan after a two week stint at Nelson College. We all hope he returns soon as he played so well for the U14A team in Culverden. Thanks also to Andy Stephens and Richard McLaren for helping me coach this team.
