Welcome to this week's newsletter. We've got details of the upcoming interclub events (University Relays and Vosseler Shield), lots of event information down the bottom and a few other bits and bobs. News and results - There was a good turnout for the social run up the Ōtaki River on Sunday. The weather stayed warm and dry and the coffee at River Cottage was most welcome! There's another cafe run in the calendar this winter (Raumati South on 24 June) so get it in your diary now!
- We're not aware of any club members that ran Rotorua Marathon on Saturday, but if you did and we missed it, please let us know! Sounds like conditions were good for the runners this year.
- This weekend is the University Relays at Macakys Crossing, Queen Elizabeth Park. Details below. We're still on the lookout for team members for the relays so let Hannah know (or reply to this e-mail) if you're keen to run. You don't have to be a paid-up club member to run in the relays so it's a great opportunity to get a taste for the fun of interclub cross-country in a friendly setting!
- The following Saturday (19 May) is the Vosseler Shield at Mt Vic. Details below. You need to be a paid-up, competitive club member for this one. Get your membeship sorted by this Friday (11 May) and you'll get a personalised bib! Check out the details below and get involved. It's one of the best events on the cross country calendar.

- Please do let us know if you've taken part in an event so we can include all the amazing performances by club members in our newsletter. It's great to be able to publicise and celebrate everyone's achievements!
2018 is the club's Jubilee (50th) year. We're planning to hold a social event later in the year to commerate the occasion. We need helpers to organise the event. If you're keen to be involved in organising the event, please let us know. Upcoming events Club and interclub events (see our club calendar for more) - Saturday 12 May - University Relays. The second interclub relay of the season at Queen Elizabeth Park. Full details below. 4 person teams for juniors, open and masters. Also fun run for younger grades (course map here).
- Saturday 19 May - Vossler Shield. A good, hilly interclub cross country event at Mt Vic, organised by Wellington Harriers. See below.
- Sunday 3 June - Event 2 in our Winter Off-Road Series. Run options for all ages and abilities and it's FREE for club members!
Other events - Pencarrow Lighthouse Fun Runs are on 13 May. Distances from 5km to 21.1km.
- The 4th Xterra event is on on this Saturday 20 May at Belmont Regional Park.
- In the Footsteps of the Marines is on Sunday 27 May. 11.5km of mixed terrain in Whareroa Farm. A great fun event organised by our friends in the Kāpiti Joggers and Walkers. Online entries here. See below for more information.
- Lower North Island Interclub Duathlon - 10 June 2018. Manawatu Tri Club are running an interclub duathlon at Manfeild Race Track. Sounds like a great idea with closed roads and, for the championship event, draft legal racing. See below for full details.
- Kāpiti Parkrun is on every Saturday morning, 8am at Otaihanga Domain. A free, timed 5km along the Waikanae River. Head to the Parkrun website to register and print off your barcode.
- The club lists all our events, and some others in the region, on our club google calendar: http://bit.ly/2oNDQUU You can add the calendar to your own google account and never miss another club event!
- The NZ Running Calendar includes triathlon, swim, bike, run, obstacle course and mountain bike events and even film festivals and expos! And if you see an event that takes your fancy and think it would be a good one for the club to attend 'gang-handed', post ideas to our Facebook page.
Training and club sessions - Wednesday nights - meet at 5.15pm at the Coastlands Aquatic Centre for a social run.
- Junior training this Sunday is at Waikanae Beach. Meet by the tennis court on Tutere Street, 2pm. Free for club members, $5 for others. Check the website for details and join the Facebook Group for junior training announcements and info.
- There is also a junior cross-country squad for competitive juniors runners on Tuesdays, 5.15pm, Waikanae Park. $5 per session. See FSA Coaching's website for more details.
- Anyone wanting to publicise a training session or looking for training partners, please get in touch and we can put the word out.
- You can also use our Club Strava Group to create and publicise events (get on the group if you're not already!)
Club membership - Now is the time to get your club membership sorted (if you haven't already) if you want to run interclub cross-country this year!
- We are always keen to attract new members. You can join online here. Our membership flyer is here. If you want to know what else you get from membership of an Athletics NZ affliated club, check out the member benefits here. In addition, you will receive heavily discounted entry (or even free entry) at the majority of our club events, discounted squad fees, be able to run at inter-club events and be eligible for representative teams. We are affliated to Triathlon NZ and have a number of keen triathletes (and accredited coaches) in the club. We also have a number of social functions throughout the year. Event information from event organisers University Relays - 12 May 2018 - The format will be the same as last year with the Chocolate Walk at noon, Boys & Girls Races from 1.15 pm and the main relay starting at 2.50 pm (all grades start together).
- Note that the previous grade of Open 50+ now has separate M50+ and W50+ grades.
- There is no need to enter teams before the event. Please copy the relay entry form and submit your entry and recorded times to the Race Headquarters tent after the event.
- We recommend you advise your members to allow plenty of time to travel out to QE Park as traffic can be busy on a weekend up the coast.
ABSOLUTELY NO DOGS ARE PERMITTED ON THE FARM AREA OF QE PARK EITHER LOOSE, ON LEADS OR IN CARS SO PLEASE ASK YOUR MEMBERS TO LEAVE THEIR CANINES AT HOME - THANKS! We look forward to seeing you there.
Vosseler Shield - 19 May 2018 Here is the race information that your Club will need for this year’s Vosseler Shield Races to be held on Mt Victoria on Saturday 19 May. Athletics Wellington will issue new race bibs incorporating new timing chips this year. Athletes must be financial full competition members in Athletics NZ ClubNet database by Friday 11 May in order to receive a personalised race bib. An athlete may become financial after 11 May and before midnight Wednesday 16 May (the final close off day) and still compete in the Vosseler Shield; a temporary race bib will be issued which must be returned after the race. IMPORTANT: Each Club is to provide a representative (or representatives) who can remain at the WHAC Clubrooms on race day between midday and 2:30pm in order to distribute the race bibs to members of their Club. This was agreed by Clubs at the AW XC&R Committee meeting. Thank you for your cooperation. In the Footsteps of the Marines - 27 May 2018 Greetings folks The Kapiti Joggers and Walkers seventh annual "In the Footsteps of the Marines" charity event is on at Whareroa Farm, Paekakariki on Sunday 27th May. This year's event will be entirely on farm and hill tracks in Whareroa Farm, and on Campbells Mill Road where the Marines trained in 1942-3. This year our major donations will go to the Life Flight Trust and the Kapiti Women’s Refuge. The $25 entry fee entitles you to a certificate and a cup of soup and roll after the event, as well as a chance of winning a spot prize. VENUE - Manfeild Circuit - South Street, FeildingThis is a one off chance to race on Manfeild Motor-racing circuit on your bike! We thought this would be a fun event and to encourage a friendly inter-club challenge. The rules for the inter-club challenge are below - but may be modified depending on the number of entries received from other clubs to try to make it as fair as possible. We have kept entry cost to a bare minimum and encourage you to come and attend. We are hopeful to have sponsorship for winners in each course (yet to be confirmed). Cycle course will be multiple circuits of the race track - full track for long & champs; smaller track for medium and short course. Run course will be a mix of park run and a circuit of the race track - so will be very spectator friendly. Note this is a pre-entry race. Online entry only (will close day before event - 9th June). TIMES (approx)- 8-8:45 am Race registration (all courses)

COURSES (Age grades given are for the interclub challenge)- Championship Course Run 6.8 km; Cycle 29 km; Run 4.5 km (Open Grade only)

- Short Course Run 1.75 km; Cycle 5.5 km; Run 1.75 km (Under 13 yrs; Under 11 Years)
NB - we reserve the right to combine age grades if insufficient entries in a given age/gender grade are registered - this will only be for the purpose of allocating inter club points. Note people entering out of their age group (eg a 30 year old doing the medium course) can still enter but will not be allocated points for the inter club or qualify for overall placing in the grade (eg 1st, 2nd, 3rd.) CYCLING RULES CHAMPIONSHIP COURSE ONLY – Draft legal racing on bike – no tt bikes or aero-bars allowed. ALL OTHER COURSE – Drafting not allowed. TT bikes okay. Keep 10m spacing when following (NZ Tri rules to be used). INTERCLUB CHALLENGE Points allocated in each age/gender grade (except social) – 20 points 1st; 19 points 2nd etc, 20th onwards 1 point. Each club takes its top 20 duathletes across all grades – aggregate the top 20 scores. Top score wins overall. If a club has less than 20 participants then obviously they will be at a disadvantage ( we may reassess numbers when all entries are in). Capital City Triathlon Series Missing the summer events already? Get your pencils out and write these dates down! We've come up with some tentative event dates, pending council approval and confirmation of the Tri NZ season calendar. Hopefully these will keep you motivated over winter and set you up for a fun triathlon season next summer. - Sunday 17th June 2018: duathlon, short & medium distances
- Sunday 19th August 2018: duathlon, short & medium distances (possibly draft legal with road closure, council approval required)
- Sunday 14th October 2018: off road duathlon
- Sunday 11th November 2018: reverse order triathlon (with pool swim)
- Sunday 23rd December 2018: super sprint triathlon + team tag relay
- Sunday 20th January 2019: triathlon, sprint & short distances
- Sunday 10th March 2019: triathlon, standard, sprint & short distances
We are still working on the finer details and a couple of the events (the off road duathlon in October and reverse order triathlon in November) require approval from council and other entities before we can proceed with planning. We will keep you posted on whether or not these will go ahead. In the meantime, if you have any feedback or suggestions regarding these dates and events please let us know.
