NELSON COLLEGE RUGBY NEWS

5th September 2022

What a season our teams have had. The 1st XV have achieved beyond expectation with basically a whole new team this season winning the Miles Toyota Championship for the second year in a row, finishing second on the South Island (Top 8 in NZ), winning the Quadrangular Tournament in Whanganui, reclaiming the Whangamoa Trophy off Marlborough Boys' College and winning the Trust Bank Cup off St. Bedes. These are outstanding achievements for this teams and they should be immensely proud. A huge thank you must go to the team behind them including their coaches Jono Phillips, Mike Fraser, Marty O'Cain & Grant Billcliff. Manager Peter Grigg, Assistant Manager Will Moloney, Physiotherapists Chris Wahnig & Matt Doonan, and trainer Max Fraine. Congratulations to you all.

Our Age Grade teams have also performed well with three teams making their respective finals. They are U14 Argentina, U15 Kahurangi & U17 Oxford. Both the U15 & U17 Finals have unfortunately been cancelled due to the state of emergency and the unavailability of players, but the U14 Final is going ahead and we wish our Argentina team all the best in this game and I certainly plan to be there supporting them! Thank you to all our coaches and managers who have been involved with these teams. Your time, skills and dedication to our teams in invaluable. Thank you also to our coaches and managers for our Pathway teams including the 2nd XV, U16A , U15A & U14A teams. You have all done an excellent job considering the circumstances with many trainings cancelled or games not being able to be played due to poor weather. Thank you all.

1st XV Match Report

The 1st XV came up against a very good John McGlashan team who were well coached with 19 Year 13 boys in it and it proved a bridge too far. Our team got off to a great start scoring first through well constructed play leading to Matt Lowe crossing the line. McGlashan struck bad not long after scoring two of their own, before Hennie Fa'avae intercepted a pass and ran in a try to make it 12 all. McGlashan then put on a further 10 points to lead at halftime 22-12. It was unfortunate that Dane Leppien was held up whilst diving for a try by an excellent tackle. McGlashan scsored again straight after half time to take a commanding lead 29-12. However, our team never gave up and scored in the 49th minutes and 69th minute to see close the score to 26-29 which only referees time remaining. Unfortunately the team couldn't manage to score again and John McGlashan won 29-26, but the team can hold their heads up high. They put in a great effort for a very young team. The team scored 4 tries to Matt Lowe 2, Hennie Fa'avae & Teina Thompson. Zyon Ford kicked 3 conversions.

Kind Regards
