Some of you may have noticed the distinct lack of newsletters in recent weeks; some of you may not have noticed; and some of you may have even been glad of the quiet (how rude!). But we're back with a bang, trying to catch up on the awesome performances of the last couple of months and with news of what's ahead over the summer. Read on my friends... News - This Sunday is the first Waikanae Kids Triathlon of the Summer. You can enter online here. Full details on our website and on the Facebook event page. These events are low-key, lots of fun, super-cheap to enter and open to all primary school-aged children. Thanks to the fantastic support of Thrive Chiropractic on Kāpiti Road, Paraparaumu, the first 30 online entries will receive a free water bottle (to collect at the event).
- The third event in our 5km series is coming up on 17 December. FREE for club members, $5 for others (max. $10 per family). The first five events in the series are from the Salt and Wood in Waikanae. Check out our website for more details.
- Good luck to everyone taking part in the Taupo 70.3 event this Saturday!
Race results - There have been so many great performances whilst I've been too lazy to do the newsletter that I'm likely to miss something, but here goes anyway (and apologies in advance to those I've missed):
- Firstly, I missed club member Erin McKevitt in my previous report on the Big Bang Adventure Race. Well done Erin for toughing out that challenging day in the hills!
- At Feilding half marathon, Stefan Wong was 2nd overall in 1:25; Alvirg Busa was 7th in 1:25. Speedy.
- Mike Keenan clearly likes his races as tough as they come, taking on the Aorangi Undulator (look it up if you don't know about it) and finishing in 7:04 (yes, that's seven hours and four minutes). Great effort Mike.
- Lucy Lawlor went to the home of the marathon, Athens and smashed out a 3.29. Thankfully, unlike Pheidippides before her, Lucy survived the experience! Phew!
- Tom Bland and Finlay Bland beat back the thronging competition (ahem) at the club duathlon champs in Linton, walking away with the senior mens' and junior mens' trophies for their efforts.
- Janie Evans and Tom Bland braved the chilly Scorching Bay water at the Capital City Triathlon event.
- Carter Prendergast took on the hot conditions at the Pelorus Trust Half Marathon in Lower Hutt, finishing in 1:53. Jo Humphries also completed the 10km event.
- Sandi Cooper completed the weather-affected Goat Adventure Run last weekend.
- And we've already had two events in our 5km Summer Series. Results here. And thanks to series sponsors Stirling Sports Kāpiti, Deans and Associates and the Boundary Tap and Kitchen for their support.
- That's a wrap!
Please let me know if you've taken part in an event (preferably before Wednesday) so it can be included in the newsletter (we do really like to celebrate performances). Training article of the week- Each week, we highlight a training article that might be of interest to runners and triathletes. If you've read an interesting training article recently, let us know and we'll include it in an upcoming Training article of the week!
- I bet you've never heard of 'sexy pace' running (I hadn't until just now). But I bet you're interested in what it's all about, aye? Well read this week's article to find out all about it. SPOILER ALERT: apparently, it's just running slowly...
Upcoming eventsClub and interclub events (see our club calendar for more) Other events - The club lists all our events, and some others in the region, on our club google calendar: http://bit.ly/2oNDQUU. You can add the calendar to your own google account and never miss another club event!
- The NZ Running Calendar includes triathlon, swim, bike, run, obstacle course and mountain bike events and even film festivals and expos! And if you see an event that takes your fancy and think it would be a good one for the club to attend 'gang-handed', post ideas to our Facebook page.
Training and club sessions - Wednesday nights - meet at 5.45pm at the Coastlands Aquatic Centre for a social run.
- Sunday mornings - meet at 9.00am for a longer run (90 minutes to 3 hours), get in touch with Peter Ellis for details of location and meeting point (peter.ellis@xtra.co.nz).
- Junior training - Check the website for details of the junior sessions and join the Facebook Group for junior training announcements and info.
- Anyone wanting to publicise a training session or looking for training partners, please get in touch and we can put the word out.
- You can also use our Club Strava Group to create and publicise events (get on the group if you're not already!)
Club membership - We are always keen to attract new members. You can join online here. Our membership flyer is here. If you want to know what else you get from membership of an Athletics NZ affliated club, check out the member benefits here. In addition, you will receive heavily discounted entry (or even free entry) at the majority of our club events, discounted squad fees, be able to run at inter-club events and be eligible for representative teams. We are affliated to Triathlon NZ and have a number of keen triathletes (and accredited coaches) in the club. We also have a number of social functions throughout the year. If you want to train and compete with the club, you can join us here. Any questions, ask one of our friendly committee members.
Other stuff - Call for newsletter items - if you want some company to train with, you've got a flash new bike and want to sell your old steel workhorse or you've just smashed your half marathon PB (or anything else that might be newsworthy) let us know for inclusion in the next newsletter.
