April 2023 - Summer has passed, Autumn colours have replaced the green, Winter is threatening to cool off the air.
The 2022/2023 softball season has concluded with only the Easter Classic to be played before International Ball takes the attention.
All three Club Prizegivings have been held with great turnouts for all three.
The fences on Warren Freer have been dropped and stored away for the winter, leaving the grounds available for the winter code, although the NZ White Sox have trainings planned prior to their World Qualifier in July.
Playing uniforms have been collected, just need to be folded and stored in their containers until next season.
The Club Committee of course remains holding meetings by ZOOM to finalise the season and prepare for the next.
The Committee would like to thank you all for the past season and wish you well for your winter ventures, whether it be on a sports field or resting.
Happy Easter weekend - hope the Bunny is good to you.
How appropriate that the Spotlight this month has fallen on the lady with the “Heart of Gold.”
Not only is she the “Easter Bunny”, the “Christmas Fairy”, but the “Fundraiser extraordinaire” with the energy and ideas to burn. From fundraising for the Club, Auckland and Club representatives and NZ players, to assisting players from other clubs in their quests to raise finances to travel to represent their Associations or their country.
Married to Ricky with two sons, Max and Ryan, who are both sportsmen, currently playing for Ramblers Premier and Reserve Mens team.
Megan is a softball statistician who not only scores for her appointed team, but also scores for other teams as her time permits. This season saw Megan as Manager/Scorer for the Ramblers Premier men’s team, scorer for the Ramblers Reserve men and on the roster to score for Under 19 boys, under 17 boys and even scored for the Ramblers Under 11s team when they played In the Championship final.
Although Megan is not currently on the Mt Albert Ramblers Executive Committee, a role that she held for many years in the past, she is the allocator of umpires for games played at Warren Freer which involve Ramblers teams, as well as communicating with the scorers on the roster for the Under 19 and Under 17 games.
Living next door to the park, of course leaves her and Ricky targets for the opening and closing of the dressing rooms, keeper of the light switches for the lights on the park as well as on call for any security call outs.
As already alluded to, Megan has been on the Ramblers Executive Committee in several roles, until she was elected on to the Auckland Softball Association Board, which she Chaired. This election saw Megan resign from Ramblers committee due to conflicting interests.
Megan was awarded a Life membership of Mt Albert Ramblers Club in 2020, joining her husband Ricky, plus both her mother Colleen and father Noel Callaghan.
Last week Megan was the recipient of the Clubs prestigious award, the Lawrence Whitmore trophy for Best Club Supporter, which she shared with her husband. Megan won this trophy in 1996/97 season with her sister Deanna Callaghan. Megan has been the recipient of the Paunovic Cup, for Most Ideal Club Member, on two occasions being 2005/06 and 2019/20.
The accolades for Megan can go on and on, however this newsletter has to be distributed today, so maybe it will need to be a story “to be continued”.
Watch out for Megan’s next fundraising ventures and her passion for the softball players in both her Club, Association and Country.
Thank you Megan for your enthusiasm, and all this while teaching as your profession.
CONGRATULATIONS to all the Clubs teams that had success on the diamonds this season, however can not go past the achievements of the Pure Athletic Premier Mens team, who brought home the 2022 Club Championship title, being the 12th title the Ramblers men have won over the years. This win was very special, as it saw the team with a record 4 peat wins. The first in Softball NZ history.

The NZ White Sox are utilising Warren Freer and Ramblers Clubrooms over Easter weekend for a training camp in preparation for their trip to Italy in July to play in the Qualifier for the World Cup 2024.
4 Australian Junior teams that are in New Zealand to compete in the Easter Classic at Pukekohe, are training at Warren Freer on Thursday April 6th with lunch at the Club provided by Sportslink.
As we have a number of players going overseas to play in our winter season, next month will endeavour to start an Overseas player information section for your reading information.
