Kia ora koutou,

The challenge of keeping moving through winter is something we can all relate to. With the short days and cold temperatures, it can be harder to find ways to get moving.

Our Green Prescription team have a lot of experience helping people find options that are right for them - finding pathways to wellbeing that can be truly life-changing. The service is free and available around Taranaki and well worth spreading the word about. Of course those just looking for fresh ideas should look no further than our Activity Hub on our website – with a range of activities and sports on offer to get you excited.

Other news we are excited about is the relaunch of the Taranaki Sports Hall of Fame. Our vision of Taranaki: active for life, is all about inspiring people everywhere to get active in ways that work for them – and part of that is celebrating the achievements of some of our highest achieving sportspeople.

You can discover more about our current Hall of Fame members and the nomination process which opened recntly. New inductees into the Taranaki Hall of Fame will be announced at this year’s Taranaki Sports Awards on 17 November.

 Ngā mihi nui

Michael Carr

Green Prescription in South Taranaki

Over the past year we have had a Green Prescription Advisor available in person in Hāwera. This has allowed us to work more closely with other local support services and means our participants have increased access and face to face support from our team.

Our South Taranaki Advisor Emma Coombe is thoroughly enjoying her time working out of the Pinnacle Health rooms in Victoria Street on alternating Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you are keen to connect with Green Prescription please head to our website for more information and referral pathways.

We are always interested to find out about all the amazing opportunities out there for participants that are wanting to be more  physically active across Taranaki. If you know of any groups or activities that we can share with others please get in touch with our team.

Nymbl App Available Now

Nymbl is a safe and effective way to improve balance! It is a fun way enable older New Zealanders (50+ and over) to stay safe, stay independent and avoid a fall by incorporating balance training into their routine. Clinical research shows simple body movements improves balance and reduces the risk of falls by almost a third.

Nymbl is fun, easy, and free. It’s fully funded by ACC. It is a great compliment to community strength and balance classes, allowing you to practice your balance activity from the comfort of home.

You can download now from the Apple App store or Google Play

Does your organisation take bookings for your hall, clubroom or other facilities? Do you want to maximise revenue while minimising administration?  Then we have a solution!

Sport Taranaki are hosting a webinar with booking platform SpacetoCo on the evening of Wednesday 19 July from 7 pm to 8.30 pm.

The platform is perhaps best described as “Air B N B” for community facilities, allowing users to see at glance what venues are available, what the hire costs are and other practical information such as the availability of things like kitchen facilities, WIFI, table and chairs etc. Users can submit a booking enquiry with a simple click and club volunteers can approve as and when it suits them – no calls during your workday and no more invoicing or chasing payments!

In this free, no obligation webinar, SpacetoCo will demonstrate the platforms’ features, convey why it is such a useful tool and solution for 21st century venue management.

Hear from current venue committee users about how the platform has increased their revenue and taken the load off volunteers.

Staff Spotlight: Green Prescription

 Claire White

Claire has worked for Sport Taranaki since 2014. The connection between physical activity and hauora has been one that has driven her throughout her life. Initially training as a physiotherapist and working in both the private and public sectors in New Zealand and overseas, Claire has the clinical expertise to support others to be more active for better health.  From those with long term health issues, to those coming back from injury or illness, staying independent within their homes or preparing for upcoming surgery, the ‘drug’ of movement is one of the most effective tools we have in preventative medicine. Supporting others to help make that connect, to understand their ‘why’, their barriers and their enablers is the challenge that drives her with her mahi. She is always looking to make it easier for people to be active in ways that are fun, safe, effective and sustainable.
