The teams lists have been finalised (with some late additions still possible). Lists are below within this newsletter) and there have been a significant number of changes so please look for your child's name carefully.  Some players are in completely different teams so please check for your child's name.

The 7th/8th grade girls team still need some players so if anyone knows of any girls born in 2005/06 who would be keen to play please tell them about us.

2023 SEASON START DATE

First Kicks MAY 5th

Other junior football May 6th

12th grade grading tournament Sunday April 30th

13th grade grading tournament TBC

The start date for the 2023 junior season have been changed by Central Football.  Starting weekend for First Kicks up to 11th grade is now the weekend of 5th May.

The 12th and 13th grade are due to have grading tournaments on Sunday 30th April - more details to come as they are received.

We now have 300 players registered - a milestone for the junior club.  We have done our best to accommodate all teammate and team requests but it is not usually possible to satisfy all the players.

12th grade team placement session outcome

The 12th grade player placement session was great and thanks to all the players that could make it.  All the coaches for the 12th grade and myself as club Director took many things into consideration when making up the different squads, including friend requests, how seriously players wanted to take the season, GK positions and previous playing experience.

The final squads are below.  The idea is that the goalkeepers in the squads will play with the 3 different teams throughout the season to get a range of experience on game days.  Other players will also at times be asked to play in different teams on some Saturdays to give them the best chance to develop and socialise with different players throughout the season.

This age group was the biggest headache and we are aware that some people may not agree with all of the decisions.  The decisions have been made with player best interest at the heart of all decisions.

13th grade trial outcome

The trial session for the 13th grade was also a great evening and thanks to those who made it.  It was decided that we will have what is likely to be a division 1 side and a division 2 side.  Due to numbers in the teams it is likely that sometimes players from either squad may be invited to play 2 games on a Saturday, giving players experience in both divisions.

There may be some movement of players early in the season as some players could not make the trials and we had to go with teams based on what we knwo of those players who were absent.  We are trying to ensure all players at this age are in the best environment for their football enjoyment and development.

Jason and Ethan have decided to run trainings together/alongside each other so the whole group get to benefit from the experience of both coaches.

VOLUNTEER COACHES

Our coaches are all volunteers.  Some do have more football knowledge or coaching experience than others.  Can the coaches listed as team coach for all teams please contact Adam ([email protected]) to confirm they are happy to be team coach if they have not done so already.

We now have almost all of the coaching roles filled by our amazing volunteer parents.  The others will be organised as teams are filled and players asigned to their final teams.

The Waveriders are still in need of a coach and I will contact the parents of that team separately.

ADAM WILL RUN HIS GROUP TRAINING SESSIONS FOR THE 7th/8th GRADE GROUP AT MONRAD PARK ON TUESDAYS AT 3.45-4.45pm UNLESS YOUR TEAM COACH FROM THIS AGE GROUP ORGANISES ANOTHER TIME.  THESE SESSIONS WILL BEGIN ON TUESDAY APRIL 25th (ANZAC DAY)

MOST COACHES CHOOSE TO HAVE THEIR TRAININGS ON A TUESDAY AFTERNOON/EVENING AT MONRAD PARK BUT EACH COACH WILL CHOOSE THERE OWN TRAINING TIME AND DAY BASED ON THEIR SCHEDULE AND AVAILABILITY

IMPORTANT TIMES -

SEASON START DATE CHANGED, SEE BELOW

FIRST KICKS

First session is Friday 5th May 4-5pm.  Please wear shorts, socks, shin pads and boots. The playing tops will be distributed at the start of the first session so please arrive a little early for the first session. We are in short supply of the club socks at the moment but some will be available at this session for $10 cash.

7th-11th grade

First game day is Saturday 6th May.  Your coach should be in touch about training and fixtures once they are finalised.  Please bear in mind the 7th/8th grade Saturday sessions are often a bit of a shambles for the first 2 weeks.

Game times:

8th grade: 8.45am

7th/8th girls: 8.45am

9th grade: 8.45am

13th-12th grade

The 12th and 13th grade traditionally have a grading tournament on the first Sunday of the season (which will be 30th April this year).  The 12th grade tournament is confirmed for the 30th at Monrad Park. I am awaiting confirmation about the 13th grade tournament.

Usual Saturday game times:

12th grade: 10.30am

13th grade: 8.45am or 10.30am (times vary week to week)

WELCOME LETTER

There is a welcome letter below which contains a lot of important information.  Please take the time to read through it.

Kit requirements

We provide playing shirts for all the players at Red Sox JFC for the winter season.

Our playing shorts are navy blue and we wear, unsurprisingly,  red socks.

Shin pads and appropriate footwear are essential for training and games too.

The coaches will have the team gear and will distribute the playing tops at your first team get together.

Our Red Sox branded socks ($10) are currently in short supply.  The supplier unfortunately was badly affected by the recent floods in NZ.  Lotto have now added some of their stock red socks to the club shop (accessed via clicking on the Lotto advert below) and they should be available direct from there soon.  We will use these for those needing new socks for the upcoming season.

Any navy blue shorts are OK but it does look great when everyone is in the official kit.  The official shorts are also out of stock in many sizes but I have been assured a new load of stock will be available soon.  I will notify people when they are again available but keep trying the link.  Until they are available please feel free to wear any appropriate shorts you have.

JUNIOR CLUB SPONSORSHIP LEAD

We look to sponsorship and funding to enable us to keep fees low and provide the amazing experience we feel we offer.  Unfortunately a person who had volunteered to fulfil the Sponsorship lead role has had to withdraw before starting due to work commitments.

This leaves an opportunity open for an enthusiastic volunteer to join the junior club in very important role.

If you would like to help the club continue growing into the future please contact me about taking on the sponsoorship and funding lead role.

SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITY

This season we are offering the opportunity for local companies/businesses to sponsor individual teams and have the team named after them e.g. Caltex Red Sox JFC First Kicks.

The cost of team sponsorship is $500 per team.

If you own or work at a company who you think may be interested in this option please contact Adam and let him know.

The team names are mentioned regularly during the season on our social media platforms as well as being on the fixture lists to all teams involved with the football season from our club and other clubs.

It is a great way to help support the junior club, in turn helping to support our growth of junior football.

WELCOME LETTER

Hi,

Thanks for signing up to be a part of the Red Sox whanau, 2023.

We have again had lots of new players register this year as well as the returning players so we should have a really exciting season ahead.

Trainings will be arranged by team coaches who should be in contact soon once team lists are finalised.

We rely on our volunteer parents/carers to run the teams on game day and without the volunteers our local clubs could not run. Please put your hand up to help if possible and if you disagree with anything the coach/manager is doing, remember you decided not to volunteer. We encourage a supportive and safe environment for all members of the Red Sox JFC family from the youngest players through to the coaches and supporters.

Attending training is preferable but not essential and if for any reason your child cannot be at training it is club policy that this does not affect game time on Saturdays once the season begins.

Parking for training is available in the Highbury Whanau Centre car park. Parking at Monrad Park on Saturdays for matches is busy and sometimes a walk is necessary!

Payment is now due and if you haven't already paid please pay the $75 (or $40 for First Kicks) fee via internet banking, USING YOUR CHILD'S NAME AS REFERENCE:

Bank account details for online payment:
Bank: Westpac
Account name: Riverside Redsox Junior Soccer
Account number: 03-0728-0429432-00

The official shorts along with other player and supporter apparel is available here:

For the training sessions (and matches) please ensure your child is wearing shin pads and appropriate footwear. Boots are not essential but the ground can get quite wet over winter and boots make running easier. Shin pads are essential for game days and children are not allowed to play without shin pads. A full water bottle is also required.

The Saturday morning format for the 7th and 8th grade is as follows. The children rotate around a "pod" starting with their own team coach. They play 3 football based games to work on different skills required for football. They then have 2 matches at the end of the session. The sessions last for about an hour.

The Saturday format for the older age groups is slightly different. The players arrive and warm up. They then play a more extended game. Some rules are different from "normal" football. The change in rules is to encourage football to be played according to the NZF football philosophy and also to encourage more ball in-play time and a continuous flow to the game. Details can be found in the Junior Framework Handbook:

https://www.centralfootball.co.nz/asset/downloadasset?id=fccc2d44-646a-4cd6-a371-bf16e4863fc0

Game times:

7th grade: 10.30am

8th grade: 8.45am

7th/8th girls: 8.45am

9th grade: 8.45am

10th grade: 10.30am

9th/10th girls: 8.45am

11th grade: 8.45am

11th/12th girls: 8.45am or 10.30am (times vary week to week)

13th grade KO times vary between 8.45am and 10.30am

For the younger/less confident children, parent/sibling/carer involvement is welcomed. We would rather someone hold a child's hand and join in than they watch from behind parent's legs on the sideline. This means that occasionally a parent (especially in the 7th grade) may be on the pitch while the children play, even during the matches. Please be understanding if this situation arises, although the parent should not be kicking the ball/tackling. If you have any issues during the 7th/8th grade sessions there will be a Fun Football coordinator present from Central Football. Please address any issues regarding parent/supporter behaviour to them in the first instance. If there are any issues for the 9th grade and older please bring any issues to me and I will raise them with Central Football.

Since 2021 guidelines have been issued by NZF regarding community based football. The summary is as follows:

1) Age groups 12th grade and under have no recorded scores or league tables.

2) Clubs should not hold trials but players should be placed in teams of mixed ability.

3) All players receive equal playing time.

4) Teams will be placed in pools of 4-6 teams. After a few rounds of play, teams should be moved up or down pools based on results (entered only with Central Football - not made public). This should ensure matches/scores even out early in the season.  This pool idea may be different as players get older.

5) If possible female players should play in all girl teams in all girl leagues.

These ideas are a part of the NZF 'Whole Of Football" plan and are non-negotiable.

I have done my best to accommodate requests to be in teams with friends, especially in the younger age groups.  It is more difficult to do this for the older groups as some players have been playing together for a long time.  For team selection I take into consideration; previous playing together, friend requests, level appropriateness to age, physical ability, resilience (for the players I know) mentality as well as where I think a player would best fit for their overall football development.  It is not an easy task.

Please contact me if you have queries regarding the upcoming season.

I look forward to seeing you all soon.

Adam

It is becoming increasingly difficult to keep everyone happy as we increase in size as a club.  Please bear in mind that everything possible is done but there is a limit to how many players can be in a team for players to get appropriate playing time.
