NELSON COLLEGE RUGBY NEWS
16th May 2023
What a great day Saturday was for Club Day at Nelson College! The sun was shining bright and there were so many old boys, staff, parents and supporters enjoying watching our teams play Rugby. It was great to see our College Band entertaining the crowd with Conquest of Paradise by Vangelis playing as the ribbon was cut by Old Boy Chris Harvey and the teams took the field. A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this day happen and in particular, thank you to Iain Graham who drove the front field project from start to finish, and the field certainly played its part on Saturday. What a great looking surface.
We had some really good games played at Broads with our U15 teams playing each other. U15 White came away victorious with a 33-19 win over U15 Kahurangi. This game can be viewed here. We also had our U17 teams playing with our Oxford team defeating our Kahurangi team 31-10, and our Cambridge team beating Stoke 37-5. Well done to all our teams and it was great to see so many boys come to the front field to support the 1st XV. It made a for a great day.
Nelson College Old Boy Passes
Nelson College Rugby would also like to acknowledge the sad passing of Billy Guyton who attended College in 2008 and played for the 1st XV. Billy was a familiar face in Rugby circles around Tasman and will be missed. Our sincerest condolences to his family. Rest in peace Billy.
1st XV News
The 1st XV played a superb game of Rugby to welcome in the newly renovated front field with a 32-17 win over St Bede's College. The first half saw both teams compete well both on attack and in defence, with Nelson taking a 14-12 lead into the half. Saumaki Saumaki & Callum Robertson scored two superb tries in doing so.
The second half saw our team take control of the game, spending the majority of the half in the St Bede's end of the field and applying lots of pressure. This resulted three more well taken tries and some exciting plays by the team.
Tries went to Saumaki Saumaki, Callum Robertson, Oliver Kirk, Oliver Gibbons & Samiuela Moimoi. Zyon Ford added 2 conversions and a penalty.
Congratulations to the team, coaches and management on the win and continuing a great start to the season.

On a disappointing note, Mikey Morrison sustained a broken leg early in the game which will see him out for the next two months. We wish Mikey a speedy recovery and knowing him, he will be back far sooner than expected!
Next Game: 11:00am vs. Christchurch Boys' High School at CBHS this Saturday. Please get along if you can to support them!
Kind Regards
